TalentKollegs Ruhr: A beacon for educational opportunities in the Ruhr area!
On September 3, 2025, significant cooperation agreements to extend the TalentKolleg Ruhr were signed in North Rhine-Westphalia. The new agreements concern the locations in Gelsenkirchen, Hagen and Oberhausen, which will continue until 2027. This project aims to improve educational opportunities in the Ruhr area and to individually support less privileged young people. School Minister Dorothee Feller described the TalentKollegs as a kind of lighthouse project that makes it easier for young people to make the transition to studying or training through individual advice and support news.rub.de reported.
The head of the school department in the city of Hagen, Regina Pott, emphasized the free funding and the comprehensive development of potential. TalentKolleg Ruhr has been supporting talented young people since 2015, with the expansion of the locations in Gelsenkirchen, Hagen and Oberhausen in 2021 representing an important milestone. The offers are aimed at young people regardless of their social background, which promotes diversity and inclusion in educational policy in the Ruhr area.
Modular approach to talent development
The concept of the TalentKolleg is based on three central pillars: orientation, qualification and motivation. This structure makes it possible to support young people individually in their study and career orientation. Under the motto “Individual study and career orientation”, each participant receives tailor-made support to make it easier to start studying or vocational training.
In addition, weekly courses take place in small groups that focus on strengthening the young people's basic skills. A particularly important aspect is personality coaching, which aims to strengthen participants' motivation and self-confidence to help them achieve their goals. In 2024, around 7,000 young people took part in TalentKolleg courses, workshops and holiday academies, which illustrates the high demand and success of the program.
Collaboration and funding
The technical implementation of the TalentKolleg is carried out by the Westphalian University of Applied Sciences Gelsenkirchen Bocholt Recklinghausen, the Ruhr West University of Applied Sciences and the Ruhr University Bochum in close cooperation with the NRW Center for Talent Promotion in Gelsenkirchen. Since 2021, the program has been financially supported by the North Rhine-Westphalia Ministry of Schools and Education and the cities of Gelsenkirchen, Oberhausen and Hagen. The state government has invested a total of 1.5 million euros in the NRW Center for Talent Promotion, which, in addition to the TalentKolleg, also includes the RuhrTalente scholarship program schulministerium.nrw reported.
With over 1,000 scholarships awarded, the RuhrTalente program is one of the largest scholarship programs in North Rhine-Westphalia. It focuses on high-performing and committed students from socioeconomically disadvantaged backgrounds and aims to promote educational equity. Through networking with various partners, including the city of Herne and the Mercator Foundation, talent promotion is structurally strengthened and expanded. This is done in particular as part of the Ruhr Conference in order to provide students with comprehensive support even in difficult times such as the pandemic.
