TU Dortmund starts a new era: Hansa Carré becomes a learning center!

The Technical University of Dortmund (TU Dortmund) has signed a long-term rental agreement for the Hansa Carré, which will result in a significant improvement in the learning and event spaces for students. These rooms are easily accessible in the evenings and therefore offer added value for students who want to study or attend events in the evenings. The urgently needed demolition of the Central Library on the North Campus is also progressing. The new building is planned in accordance with energy efficiency standard 4, which is intended to create modern workplaces that meet the needs of students and scientists.

An annual academic celebration at TU Dortmund University honored the outstanding research, teaching and study achievements of recent times. Rector Prof. Manfred Bayer spoke at this celebration and emphasized the importance of civil courage, especially in times when democratic values are at risk. In addition, Prof. Klaus von Klitzing reported on his important discovery of the quantum Hall effect and the redefinition of the kilogram.

Promoting cutting-edge research

Prof. Hannes Mutschler received the prestigious ERC Synergy Grant for his research on the origin of life. This award is part of a broader initiative that supports the promotion of cutting-edge research in Germany. The ERC funding offers various formats with submission deadlines that typically occur once a year, except for the Proof of Concept Grant, which can be submitted three times a year. The assessment process is two-stage and the processing time for applications is usually 12 to 16 months.

The Excellence Strategy, which was launched by the federal and state governments in 2016, aims to strengthen Germany as a science location in international competition and to increase visibility. This strategy consists of two funding lines: Clusters of Excellence and Universities of Excellence. The Excellence strategy is intended to promote academic excellence and sharpen university profiles. The success of the Excellence Initiative from 2007 to 2017, which led to exceptional research achievements, should be viewed as the basis.

Cooperation and sustainable development

The Institute for the Development and Research of Mathematics Teaching is actively working on concepts to improve mathematical school education in funded projects. At the same time, the Institute for Journalism is developing an e-learning platform for journalists on EU topics in collaboration with partners from 27 EU countries. These initiatives paint a picture of a university that is actively involved in promoting education and interdisciplinary collaboration.

In addition, the TU Dortmund is committed to measures to ensure the sustainable design of the campus. This includes the installation of photovoltaic systems, the creation of apple orchards, e-charging stations and bicycle discounts for employees. The University Alliance Ruhr (UA Ruhr) has published a special page highlighting that more than half of the professorships in the Research Alliance Ruhr have been filled. In addition, four full proposals were submitted as part of the Excellence Strategy, with TU Dortmund, Ruhr University Bochum and University of Duisburg-Essen offering a common curriculum for dealing with research data.
