TU Dortmund: Transport connections and new projects for the future!
On June 8, 2025, the Technical University of Dortmund (TU Dortmund) presented significant developments regarding its infrastructure and connectivity. The university campus is strategically located near the Dortmund West motorway junction, which increases accessibility for students and visitors. According to the TU Dortmund, the exits Dortmund-Eichlinghofen on the A45 and Dortmund-Dorstfeld and Dortmund-Barop on the A40 are signposted directly to the north and south campuses, which makes getting there easy. E-cars can also be charged at a charging station on Campus North, which the university supports sustainably.
The “Dortmund University” S-Bahn station is another important element of the transport connection. It is located directly on Campus North and is served by the S1 S-Bahn line. This runs every 15 or 30 minutes and connects the university with Dortmund main station and the region, including Bochum, Essen and Duisburg. Bus lines, including 445, 447 and 462, also make it easy to get to the university. Timetable information is available on the Rhine-Ruhr transport association's homepage and via DSW21, which offers an interactive route network map.
Directions to campus
The options for getting to TU Dortmund are varied and well signposted. Anyone traveling from the north via the A1 can change to the A44/B1 towards Dortmund via the Dortmund/Unna junction. The university is reached after a journey of around 18 kilometers, with the large parking space at the end of Otto-Hahn-Straße offering visitors additional convenience.
The approach is similar from the east via the A44. After the A44 turns into the B1, drivers also reach the signs to the university. The approach from the south via the A45 also leads directly to the university, although the Dortmund-Eichlinghofen exit should be used.
Transport connections and local developments
Traffic planning in Dortmund does not stand still. Current developments, such as the information fair on the Franziusstraße bridge or the road offensive in Huckarde, are intended to further improve the city's transport infrastructure. The bridge that connects the port with Huckarde will be renewed by summer 2027. In addition, further measures to promote cycling are planned in Dortmund in order to increase safety and attractiveness for cyclists.
The renovated transport network should be accessible not only for cars, but also for cyclists. Among other things, a new lane will be set up on Wittekindstrasse to improve safety for cyclists. These developments are part of the Mobility 2030 master plan, which takes a comprehensive approach to modernizing transport structures in Dortmund.
The TU Dortmund remains a central hub in the city's transport system, not only through its location, but also through the continuous improvement of its connections and infrastructure. This is a direct result of ongoing efforts to ensure optimal accessibility for both students and the general public.
