UDE start-ups on the rise: TOP 25 at the OUT OF THE BOX NRW Award!
On April 23, 2025, the two start-ups Greenlyte and LastBIM from the University of Duisburg-Essen (UDE) made it into the top 25 of the renowned OUT OF THE BOX NRW Awards. This competition is considered the most important start-up competition in North Rhine-Westphalia and has established itself as a benchmark for other federal states. Voting for final participation runs until May 2nd.
Greenlyte has developed a promising technology to reduce CO2 levels in the atmosphere. LastBIM, on the other hand, focuses on the development of software that enables improved planning of 3D models and a more efficient definition of information in construction planning. Both start-ups make an important contribution to the digital and sustainable transformation in North Rhine-Westphalia.
About the competition
The OUT OF THE BOX NRW Award is endowed with a total of 50,000 euros and is one of the most highly endowed start-up competitions in Germany. Support is provided by NRW.BANK, which ensures that the prize money is distributed directly to the participating start-ups. According to the organizers of the competition, it offers an important platform for innovative ideas and promotes the entrepreneurial spirit. This is done in collaboration with the Ministry of Economic Affairs, Industry, Climate Protection and Energy of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia.
The competition includes a comprehensive screening process by venture capital funds from North Rhine-Westphalia and public voting. This gives citizens the opportunity to actively participate in the selection of the best start-ups. On June 5th, the ten best start-ups will present their innovative ideas to a jury and a broad audience at the “Hinterland of Things” event in Bielefeld.
The role of the UDE
The University of Duisburg-Essen plays a central role in supporting start-ups in the region. The UDE provides comprehensive information about its start-ups and spin-offs on its website. The two successful start-ups Greenlyte and LastBIM are just two examples of the entrepreneurial potential that is generated at the UDE.
