University of Siegen: Easter holidays close libraries and cafeteria!

The University of Siegen has announced that the university buildings will remain closed over the Easter holidays. The closure will take effect on April 18, 2025, Good Friday, and will end on April 21, 2025, Easter Monday. This measure also affects the libraries and the catering establishments of the Siegen Student Union. Information about the regular opening times of the university, canteen, cafeteria and libraries can be viewed separately, such as uni-siegen.de reported.

The closure during the holidays ensures that students and employees can enjoy the holidays undisturbed. For many university students, this is a valuable opportunity to relax and spend time with family. Alternatively, however, there is still the option of using the university's digital resources, which are available around the clock.

Equipment of the university library

An important aspect of the Siegen University Library is the training of specialists for media and information services (FAMI) in the library department. The training takes place over a period of three years, combining practical and theoretical parts. Students are not only responsible for media procurement, cataloging and inventory maintenance, but also for lending, including booking and creating user cards. This practice-oriented training takes place at the Siegen University Library and at the Dortmund vocational college ub.uni-siegen.de clarifies.

In order to obtain a training position, a qualified secondary school certificate type B or a secondary school certificate is required. The apprenticeship positions will be advertised after the summer holidays via the university's job portal and in the local press.

Internships and student assistants

In addition to the training positions, the university library offers internships for schoolchildren and students. Students have the opportunity to get to know the various departments of the library and to actively participate over a period of 2 to 3 weeks. The contact person for these internships is Annette Zimmermann. Students on the BA/MA program in Literary, Cultural and Media Studies can also take part in specialist presentations. Internships last two weeks and an application by email is required. This is what Dr. Tim Jegodzinski is available as contact person.

Positions as student assistants are also available for students looking for part-time employment. These workplaces include tasks such as media booking as well as ordering and setting work. Working hours are Monday to Friday between 3:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. and Saturdays from 9:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. However, there are currently no vacant positions available ub.uni-muenchen.de notes.

The LMU University Library describes similar training structures. Here, too, a three-year training course is offered in the dual system, which includes practical and theoretical components. In addition to maintaining the library collection, the tasks of a specialist in the library also include advising users and procuring media. This shows how important professional training is in libraries in order to efficiently meet the information needs of users.

The various training and internship programs at universities offer a valuable opportunity for young people to get involved in this field and gain practical experience. Good training, such as that offered at the Siegen University Library and the LMU, is crucial for future success in the library and information industry.
