Celebrate diversity: FernUni is committed to Diversity Day 2025!

From May 16th to 27th, 2025, extensive activities will take place at the FernUniversität Hagen as part of the nationwide Diversity Day. The program includes both digital offerings and face-to-face activities to emphasize the importance of diversity in the world of work. Dr. Anna Haase, head of the equal opportunities department, emphasizes that diversity is a fundamental attitude for a fair and respectful working environment.

The FernUniversität has been a signatory to the Diversity Charter since February 2024, which aims to promote diversity in the world of work. Diversity Day is initiated by the Charter of Diversity association, which has organized this important day every year since 2012. This year's motto is: “When diversity wins, Germany wins.”

Promotions and events

The Diversity Days kick off on May 16th with the inauguration of a special bench on the university's Red Square, which bears the message “No place for discrimination”. This bench, which has a two-meter-long backrest and a shortened seat, will be inaugurated at 10 a.m. by Rector Prof. Stefan Stürmer. This will be followed by a photo participation event from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Here, employees can have their photos taken with personal statements against discrimination. The images are then published on a website.

The “Bank Against Racism” is part of a project funded by the federal program “Living Democracy!” is promoted. Together with the FernUniversität, a total of nine institutions received this bench to reinforce their commitment against racism. In addition, the “Subway Therapy” campaign will take place at Hagen main station on May 16th from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. Participants have the opportunity to anonymously write their thoughts and wishes on sticky notes and leave them on a wall.

Another event will take place on May 27th from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. on the Hagen campus, where diversity will be discussed. Digital formats will be offered throughout the event that present FernUniversität's voices on the topic of diversity. These include, among other things, sustainability walks and information on accessibility within the university.

Diversity in the world of work

The Diversity Charter emphasizes that a respectful and sustainable working world is only possible through diversity. In Germany there is intensive discussion about diversity, while in the USA companies are rethinking their DEI strategies. The Arsipa Group, which recently joined the Diversity Charter, is an example of a company committed to diversity in the world of work. As one of the largest service providers for occupational safety in German-speaking countries, the Arsipa Group reaffirms its commitment to an appreciative corporate culture.

Michaela Jaap, Head of Diversity & Inclusion at Hays AG, a leading personnel service provider, emphasizes the importance of the Diversity Charter. She began her career in strategic development consulting and is now responsible for projects that promote diversity and inclusion. On the board of the Diversity Charter, she is particularly committed to representing small and medium-sized companies and develops solutions that are tailored to the specific needs of these companies.

Overall, the upcoming actions at the FernUniversität Hagen and the initiatives of the Diversity Charter show how important the topic of diversity is today. It is not only a social necessity, but also a driver for economic success and innovation.
