On May 5, 2025, the Student Startup Camp at the Ruhr University Bochum will address an urgent question for many students: Is starting a business suitable for them? Many students are skeptical about starting their own companies. The bureaucratic burden and lack of knowledge about entrepreneurship are often a big hurdle. To address these concerns, the camp offers a two-week coaching workshop that makes it easier for those interested to enter the start-up world. The workshop is aimed at everyone who has no prior knowledge and promotes work in interdisciplinary teams.

On April 8, 2025, two teams were awarded the main prize at the camp: Care Circle and Pottbox. This award included free tickets for the upcoming ruhrSUMMIT 2025. Care Circle presented an innovative social app to support the homeless. The team, consisting of Zeynep Acaroglu, Aleyna Özkadi, Jan Schwidrowski and Ahmed Al-Fazzani, wants to bring volunteers and people in need more easily together through a points system that can be redeemed at local partner companies.

Innovative business ideas and practical learning

The second winning team, Pottbox, has developed a novel logistics system for shopping on campus. With the aim of connecting students, working people and restaurants more efficiently, the concept bundles orders that can then be picked up via mobile containers or trailers. Pottbox also offers sustainable, locally produced cooking bags that contain recipes and products from Bochum restaurateurs.

The workshop also includes the imparting of entrepreneurial knowledge. Participants learn how to structure their ideas, design pitch content and calculate business models. Although not all participants plan to start a company, they benefit from new insights and valuable contacts.

Next steps and conditions of participation

The next round of the Student Startup Camp starts in September 2025 and takes place twice a year during the semester break, in February and September. The next ruhrSUMMIT, an important networking event for founders and start-ups, will be held on May 27, 2025. Camp participants have the opportunity to further develop their ideas and projects in a supportive environment.

The coaching workshop for start-ups is led by the expert Dr. Andreas Bonse and the WORLDFACTORY. The block seminar will take place daily from February 17th to 28th, 2025 from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with a final presentation on March 6th, 2025. Students from various disciplines are warmly invited to develop their business ideas and learn important business basics. Registrations are possible until February 10, 2025; places will be allocated on a first come, first served basis.
