Science funding awards 2025: Researchers from Münster honored!
On June 25, 2025, an important ceremony for the awarding of the 2025 Science Sponsorship Awards by the Münster University Society took place in Münster. Three scientists were honored in a special award this year: Dr. Susanne Meinert, Dr. Karen Siegel and Dr. Daniel Kluger. This is the first time in the history of the prize that more than two winners have been honored. Each of the winners received prize money of 5,000 euros, donated by Stadtwerke Münster and VR Bank Westfalen-Lippe.
Dr. Paul-Josef Patt, Chairman of the Münster University Association, emphasized the diversity and high quality of research at the university. Prof. Dr. Johannes Wessels, Rector of the University, emphasized the relevance of the sponsorship award for recognizing young talents and their outstanding achievements in science.
The award winners in detail
Dr. In her research, Susanne Meinert has occupied the interface between brain research and psychotherapy. Her focus is on mental illnesses, especially in children and young people, with the aim of identifying them early and thus helping children and families.
Dr. Karen Siegel deals with sustainability issues in South America and leads the junior group “Transformation and Sustainability Governance in South American Bioeconomies”. She analyzes the social aspects of sustainability and political decision-making processes in Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay. Her research began with a project start during the first Corona lockdown, where she developed innovative virtual care concepts.
Dr. Daniel Kluger focuses on the breath-brain connection and, in his “Brain, Body, and Behavior” research group, investigates how breathing and other rhythmic processes influence neuronal processing and human behavior. He received an ERC Starting Grant from the European Research Council in 2022, which further underpins his research achievements.
Background of the price
The history of the funding award goes back to 1980, when it was launched to mark the 200th anniversary of the University of Münster. Its goal is to promote young scientists. The prize was previously awarded under the name “Prize for the Promotion of Young Scientists” and has been called the “Förderpreis der Universitätsgesellschaft Münster” since 2021. Nominations for the prize are open annually to all professors at the University of Münster.
The importance of the awards is reflected not only in the financial support, but also in the careful attention to the current research questions being researched by the awardees. In this way, the diversity of research approaches is recognized and strengthened.
Overall, the awarding of the 2025 Science Promotion Awards illustrates the Münster University Society's commitment to supporting young scientists and the university's ongoing influence on important research questions.
