Science Prize for Prof. Schüttpelz: A look at his successes!

Prof. Dr. Erhard Schüttpelz, a renowned professor of media theory at the University of Siegen, was today awarded the Science Prize of the Hamburg Aby Warburg Foundation. This award honors individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the arts, cultural studies and humanities. The prize, endowed with 5,000 euros, particularly honors Schüttpelz’s interdisciplinary research and his important theoretical work.

Erhard Schüttpelz, born in Haldern (now Rees) in 1961, studied in several cities such as Hanover, Exeter, Bonn, Cologne and Oxford and received his doctorate from the University of Bonn in 1994. His career includes, among other things, a scholarship at Columbia University, New York, and a postdoctoral position at the DFG graduate school “Theory of Literature and Communication” at the University of Konstanz.

Research focus and academic career

Schüttpelz has been a professor at the University of Siegen since 2005. During his academic career, he was the main applicant and long-time speaker of the DFG graduate school “Locating Media” and the special research area “Media of Cooperation”, which focuses particularly on contemporary digital research. He completed his habilitation in 2003 at the University of Konstanz and was also the scientific coordinator of the research center for cultural theory and theory of the political imaginary.

His research topics are broad, including structuralist literary theory, language theory and the history of science in the humanities. Schüttpelz emphasizes the relevance of German media studies in his research interests. He has also published several films and books that highlight his expertise, including “A Kind of World War” (2021) and “Medium, Medium: Elements of an Anthropology” (2025).
