Shaping the future: Hannover Messe shows Industry 4.0 innovations!
UNI Paderborn presents innovative projects at the Hannover Messe 2025, focused on Industry 4.0 and sustainable mobility.

Shaping the future: Hannover Messe shows Industry 4.0 innovations!
The Hannover Messe, under the motto “Data-driven Industry – Shaping a New Era”, offers a comprehensive insight into the latest innovations in the industry from March 31 to April 4, 2025. At the Industry 4.0 platform's joint stand in Hall 8, Stand D26, the University of Paderborn is presenting important projects that are helping to shape the future of the data-driven industry. The focus is, among other things, on the projects “Decide4ECO” and “NeMo.bil”, both of which are funded by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Protection. These projects illustrate how sustainable solutions can be developed through intelligent networking and digital production processes.
The “Manufacturing-X” initiative aims to simplify data exchange between industrial partners. This project is supported by the Heinz Nixdorf Institute at the University of Paderborn. This is an advance that can revolutionize the business world and is part of the broader vision of Industry 4.0, which includes the intelligent connection of machines and processes through information and communications technology. Platform I40 describes this development as the fourth industrial revolution and highlights the challenges such as IT security and uniform standards that must be overcome.
Sustainability in focus
A central element of the “Decide4ECO” project is the development of solutions for assessing the sustainability of products during the development phase. This is done by using data from software systems that flow together in data rooms via new connectors. The research aims to precisely calculate metrics such as carbon footprint, recycling rate and water use. The booth will feature innovative demonstrators, including a “data ecosystem editor” and an AI chatbot, showing visitors how these technologies can be applied in practice.
Another highlight is the “NeMo.bil” project, which is developing a needs-based mobility system for the transport of people and goods. Two types of automated vehicles are used here: small vehicles for the first and last mile and larger vehicles for longer distances. The goal is resource-saving, individual local public transport (ÖPNV). The University of Paderborn takes responsibility for the supporting structures, the digital planning of the swarm system as well as the drive and charging trains.
The role of digitalization and lean production
Industry 4.0 uses concepts such as lean production to optimize manufacturing processes. Lean production aims to minimize waste and maximize value. Through digitalization, machines and systems are networked, which leads to intelligent production. Technologies such as the Internet of Things (IoT) and big data enable data analysis to increase efficiency and create new business models. Sustainability economy describes the new possibilities that these technologies offer and also the associated challenges, for example in terms of IT security and training requirements.
One of the biggest advantages of combining lean production and digitalization is the resulting flexibility in production. These changes not only increase efficiency and product quality, but also contribute to a more sustainable production method. But not everything is positive: companies also have to face the challenges that arise from investment costs and the need to train employees.
In summary, the developments presented at the Hannover Messe offer a deep insight into the synergistic effects of data analysis, networking and sustainable production. The projects at the University of Paderborn illustrate how innovative approaches can be used to create a more climate-friendly and efficient future in industry. The ocean of opportunities created by digitalization and intelligent networking will not only make industry more efficient, but also more environmentally friendly and adaptable in an ever-changing world.
