Future-oriented resilience training: Medical students strengthen their strength!
On August 19, 2025, human and dental students used the University of Bonn the opportunity to choose from an elective offering that focuses on significant subject-related topics and personal skills. Particular attention was paid to dealing with extreme situations, which was practiced in a variety of courses. In these courses, students were able to gain valuable insights from extreme athletes such as Julia Schultz, Melina Borgmann, Julia Ertmer and Joey Kelly.
A highlight of the event was a 12km night hike led by Joey Kelly in Lohmar. The participants not only learned survival techniques in nature, but were also encouraged to experience and overcome their limits. Professor Dr. Veit Braun emphasized the importance of such topics in stressful everyday hospital life in order to promote the resilience of future doctors.
Practical experiences and resilience training
The night hike was followed by a campfire, which gave participants the opportunity to exchange ideas and share experiences. The next morning there was a five-kilometer run that focused on physical fitness and endurance. Before the night hike, self-defense techniques (Krav Maga), yoga and healthy nutrition were also covered in order to give the young doctors a comprehensive skillset.
A central component of the courses was resilience training, which was intended to help students stay calm in exceptional situations. Resilience is seen as our ability to resist, which means being able to cope with difficult life situations without psychological impairment. The training promotes the acceptance of setbacks and the ability to emerge stronger from difficult phases AOK explained.
Collaborations and the importance of resilience
In addition, the cooperation between the Medical Faculty of Bonn and the University of Siegen and four clinical training partners has opened up new horizons since 2018. The aim is to combine scientific excellence with regional healthcare in South Westphalia. This collaboration is closely linked to the effort to provide medical students with the necessary skills through practical experience.
In order to comprehensively promote resilience, the AHAB Academy training for resilience trainers. This training is aimed at developing psychological resilience and teaches seven scientifically based resilience factors. The associated courses, which are considered recognized, offer valuable approaches to stress management and help to strengthen personal resources. Participants learn how to remain optimistic and solution-oriented in difficult situations. This is supported by practical training that provides immediate application and preventive strategies to reduce stress levels in everyday life.
