On June 11, 2025, the anticipation of the 2nd Franco-German Dialogue for Peace and Justice will be clearly noticeable. The event will take place on June 23rd and 24th, 2025 in the Robert Schuman House in Trier. The event is organized by the Franco-German University (DFH), the University of Trier and the Rhineland-Palatinate Peace Academy, which underlines the importance of Franco-German cooperation in the area of peace and justice. The first dialogue was held in the Peace Palace in The Hague in 2023 and already provided important impetus back then.

The main objective of the upcoming conference is to promote peace and justice through international dialogue. The agenda includes essential topics that are of great relevance in the context of eternal crises and conflicts. These include international measures for lasting peace, strategies for crisis prevention, as well as the role of local actors, the judiciary and the culture of remembrance.

Diverse program and prominent presenters

The dialogue program includes four panel discussions dealing with the topics of peace and reconciliation, justice, conflict management and culture of remembrance. The discussion rounds are led by experienced moderators, including Philippe Gréciano from the DFH and Gregor Walter-Drop from the Rhineland-Palatinate Peace Academy. Other moderators are Manuel Fröhlich from the University of Trier and Frédérique Neau-Dufour from the Grand Est region.

Speakers include experts and academics such as Corine Defrance from the Université Paris, Panthéon Sorbonne and Roger Koudé from the Université Catholique de Lyon. International voices such as François Roux, an international lawyer, and Catharina Nickel from the United Nations University are also expected. Representatives of the Catholic University of Rwanda also play a special role, taking an active part in the discussion.

Creating a network and international challenges

Participation in the event is free, but registration is required as places are limited. Those interested should register by June 15, 2025. The dialogue will be offered in three languages: German, French and English, and simultaneous translation will be available.

The German-French University, founded in 1997, aims to strengthen German-French cooperation in the higher education and research sectors. It includes over 200 universities and colleges in Germany, France and other countries. Around 200 integrated bi- and tri-national degree programs as well as 34 international doctoral programs are funded every year. Given the current global challenges that threaten the international rules-based order, such as Russia's threat to European democracies or the ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East, the relevance of such dialogues is undeniable. BMZ In his current analysis, he highlighted the need for civil crisis prevention and the role of civil society organizations in conflict resolution, which gives the discussion in Trier additional importance. The commitment that can be expected from the organizers and participants meets the urgent need to find concrete solutions in a world characterized by power rivalries.
