The future of mobility: Hydrogen Congress in Kaiserslautern!
The third Green Gas Congress will take place at the RPTU in Kaiserslautern on March 20, 2025. The event opens at 8:30 a.m. in Building 42, Room 110. The congress was dedicated to the potential of hydrogen and methane as alternative fuels for commercial vehicles, with a clear intention: to reduce CO₂ emissions in the transport sector and thus achieve climate goals. The use of hydrogen as a fuel solution is a central component of Germany's and the EU's energy strategy and plays a crucial role in industries such as logistics, local passenger transport, as well as in agriculture and construction.
The focus of the congress is on current and future developments in hydrogen-based mobility. Experts from the energy sector and the commercial vehicle industry will discuss the technical, economic and regulatory framework. The aim is to network potential users with infrastructure operators, political actors, researchers and developers. These synergies are intended to enable a smooth transition to climate-friendly commercial vehicle drives and promote concrete implementation steps.
Topics and participants
The event will attract numerous participants from the industry, including companies such as Daimler Truck, Deutz, Liebherr, rnv, Toyota Tsusho Nexty, Voith-HySTech and Wolftank. The discussions will focus on economic and regulatory framework conditions as well as specific applications of hydrogen in intra- and interlogistics. A key aspect will be the use of fuel cell buses in urban transport, which will not only help reduce emissions but also improve air quality in urban areas.
Participation in the congress is free, but prior registration is required. The organizers are the organizing team of the Green Gas Congress, led by Prof. Dr.-Ing. Michael Günthner, as well as employees of the Chair of Drives in Vehicle Technology (LAF) at the RPTU in cooperation with Wolftank Deutschland GmbH. The event also receives support from the “We move it” initiative of the Rhineland-Palatinate Ministry of Economic Affairs, Transport, Agriculture and Viticulture.
Background and relevance
The urgency of switching to alternative fuels is underpinned by the challenges of climate change. In order to achieve climate protection goals, a mix of different options for reducing greenhouse gas emissions is required. Alternative fuels such as hydrogen have high energy density and are particularly beneficial in areas that are difficult to electrify, such as heavy road freight, shipping and aviation.
The Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport (BMDV) specifically promotes the development and use of renewable fuels in order to advance the mobility transition in Germany. A national hydrogen strategy aims to promote widespread use of hydrogen technology and make CO₂-free hydrogen affordable. By 2030, ten million tons of CO₂ should be saved using renewable fuels.
In summary, the Green Gas Congress provides a platform to discuss the important role of hydrogen as a sustainable fuel alternative and to determine how to promote widespread implementation in the commercial vehicle industry.
