French language culture can be experienced: Landau as an educational bridge to Paris
In an increasingly globalized world, the French language is becoming increasingly important not only as a means of communication, but also as a key to cultural exchange and professional opportunities. Today, March 20, 2025, on the occasion of International French Languages Day, it is reported that 230 million people in over 50 countries speak French worldwide. This highlights the relevance of language in many things, including education and professional development. The RPTU in Landau is particularly committed to promoting the French language and culture by offering numerous study programs with a connection to France.
One of the outstanding opportunities that the RPTU offers are the binational study programs in cooperation with the Sorbonne Nouvelle in Paris. This enables students to gain practical experience in Francophone regions while deepening their language skills. Landau, with its proximity to the French border and its special flair, offers the ideal setting for such academic endeavors. Local French traders and street names with Francophone roots underline the cultural connection to the neighboring region.
Binational studies and career opportunities
Since the winter semester of 2019/2020, the RPTU has been offering a binational course for German and French in high school teaching. Students have the opportunity to acquire a double degree: a license in France and a Bachelor or Master of Education in Germany. This cooperation agreement between the University of Landau and the Université Sorbonne Nouvelle makes it possible for students to be enrolled at both universities for the entire duration of their studies. This means that equivalent examination regulations and module handbooks apply that correspond to the curricula at other universities.
The students complete their years of study alternately in Germany and France. This structure requires a well-organized curriculum in order to meet the high demands and workload of a bi- or tri-national course of study. The RPTU offers support through smaller groups and a family atmosphere that enable individual support.
Practical learning opportunities
As part of the course, a three-month stay in a French-speaking country is mandatory, although there are also options in countries such as Canada, Belgium or the Seychelles. The RPTU cooperates with various universities in Nice, Strasbourg and Bordeaux as well as with the INSPE in Reims to enable school internships in France. This not only gives students the opportunity to apply their language skills, but also to immerse themselves in French culture.
In addition, the German-French Society Landau e.V. is committed to the exchange and communication of culture and language. Professor Gregor Schuhen emphasizes the uniqueness of studying in Landau, where language and attitude to life can be experienced in everyday life. The city itself offers an authentic atmosphere for studying Romance languages thanks to its architectural culture and partnerships with French cities.
Funding opportunities and scholarships
In order to reduce the financial burden on students, scholarships are crucial. The Franco-German University (DFH) offers support for financing your stay in France. Scholarship programs such as Erasmus Mundus and PROMOS ensure that eligible students can gain international experience while focusing on their academic goals.
These programs show how important it is to promote mobility and internationalization in studies and teaching. Not only do students gain valuable experience abroad, but they also stand out from their competitors on the job market by having international qualifications and experience. The RPTU's commitment in Landau is a groundbreaking example of modern higher education in a European context.
