Humanoid robots and ethics: science dialogue in Wittlich on June 11th!

On Wednesday, June 11th, at 6 p.m., the “Wittlich Science Dialogue” will take place in the Synagogue cultural and conference center in Wittlich. This event is organized by the Mittelstand Research Center at the University of Trier and supported by the Stadt Wittlich Foundation and local banks, including the Sparkasse Mittelmosel – Eifel Mosel Hunsrück and the Vereinigte Volksbank Raiffeisenbank eG. The focus of the event is the topic “Intelligent machines between emotions and ethics”, with a particular focus on artificial intelligence (AI) and its impact on business and healthcare.

Top-class speakers will appear as part of the dialogue. Professor Dr. Jörn Block will shed light on the current state of the art of humanoid robots and present their use in the Trier region. Further insights into practical projects, opportunities and challenges are provided by Professor Dr. Katrin Muehlfeld and Jonas Ossadnik, M.Sc. In addition, Dr. Asadeh Ansari-Bodewein will talk about the ethical challenges of humanoid robots. After the lectures there will be an opportunity for questions from the audience, followed by drinks and a poster presentation of student projects. The humanoid robot 'Pepper' will also be present, giving participants the opportunity to get to know him up close.

Ethical dimensions of artificial intelligence

The discussion about AI and its social implications is more topical than ever. In a statement, the German Ethics Council examined the effects of digital technologies on human self-image and relationships between people. The focus is on central concepts such as intelligence, reason, action and responsibility. A central question is whether the use of AI expands or diminishes human authorship and the conditions for responsible action. This topic is particularly relevant in four application areas: medicine, school education, public communication and administration.

The complex interactions between humans and technology require a deep philosophical consideration in order to master the ethical challenges when dealing with AI. The Wittlich Science Dialogue offers a platform to address these questions and to promote the transfer of knowledge between science and society.
