AI workshop in Kaiserslautern: Efficient solutions for medium-sized businesses!

On May 20, 2025 at 2 p.m. it will take place in the SmartFactory Kaiserslautern The practical workshop “AI workshop: Efficient production for medium-sized businesses” took place. Organized by the Rhineland-Palatinate Innovation Agency in collaboration with several institutions, the event is aimed at **specialists and managers** from middle and lower management as well as potential users of AI solutions in production. Participation is free of charge, but registration is required.

The event includes three interactive workshop sessions on key topics of AI integration into production processes. These include AI-supported **quality control** and **work planning** at the RPTU, the use of **large language models** and **digital twins** at Fraunhofer IESE, as well as various technologies to support the commissioning of production systems in the SmartFactory. The aim of the AI workshop is to provide practical insights into current trends, case studies and best practices while at the same time creating opportunities for networking with experts and other companies.

Background and meaning of the event

The relevance of AI in medium-sized businesses is becoming increasingly important, especially against the background of the **SME 4.0 Competence Centers** initiated by politicians. These were launched by the Federal Minister for Economic Affairs and Energy, Sigmar Gabriel, to offer consulting services and further training programs for small and medium-sized companies (SMEs). One of these centers is managed by the technology initiative SmartFactoryKL e.V. in Kaiserslautern, which was able to prevail against a large number of applicants.

Industry 4.0 has been a concern for politics, research and industry for four years now. SMEs and craft businesses are now faced with a variety of challenges due to technological changes. The competence centers, under the management of SmartFactoryKL, have set themselves the goal of supporting small and medium-sized companies in digitization and the application of new technologies. The initiative is supported by a combination of research partners, including the DFKI and the Technical University of Kaiserslautern.

Research and development in the SmartFactory

The **SmartFactoryKL**, which has existed since 2005, operates as a manufacturer-independent demonstration and research platform for Industry 4.0. It works with a total of 40 partners from industry and research to develop innovative concepts and technologies. Professors such as Detlef Zühlke and Wolfgang Wahlster have highlighted the leading role of SmartFactoryKL and DFKI in this development and emphasized how important data-supported networking is in order to make optimal use of the opportunities presented by digitalization.
