Sustainability in focus: JGU presents new initiatives for the future!
On July 15, 2025, the first campus-wide Sustainability Day took place at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (JGU). The aim of this event was to present initiatives, projects and building blocks for JGU's sustainability strategy. The Sustainable University Coordination Office (SUNNY) has collected numerous projects in the area of sustainability since 2023 in order to advance the development of a comprehensive strategy.
The event offered an open workshop format in which employees and students received insights into the current status of strategy development. There was also the opportunity to contribute your own perspectives and ideas. The final submission of the sustainability strategy is scheduled to be presented to the JGU Senate for discussion at the end of 2025.
Insights and opening speech
In the opening speech, JGU President Prof. Dr. Georg Krausch describes the responsibility that universities bear in the context of climate change. During her speech, Climate Protection Minister Katrin Eder emphasized the role of universities in the social transformation towards sustainability. Important topics discussed during the day included education for sustainable development, global warming, the biodiversity crisis and resource depletion.
A particular attraction was the so-called “Market of Opportunities”, where various campus initiatives and projects were presented. These included numerous interesting posters about the “Campus 2040 mission statement”. Presentations were given by the Green School, Students for Future, the NAJU university group and the environmental and geosciences degree programs, among others.
Innovations for a sustainable future
A highlight of the event was the AI-supported image development tool from the Mainz Behavioral and Experimental Laboratory (MABELLA). This tool is intended to help actively promote the sustainable design of the campus and enable new approaches in the area of campus development.
Based on the ESD recommendations ( kmk.org ) and the findings of the monitoring report on education for sustainable development ( bne-portal.de ), JGU's commitment is an important step in the right direction. These efforts not only contribute to a better understanding of sustainability, but also encourage active participation by students and employees.
