New degree programs at JGU: Starting signal for business administration and economics in winter!
The Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (JGU) is expanding its range of courses and will introduce two new Bachelor's degree programs in the winter semester of 2025/26: Business Administration (BWL) and Economics (VWL). This represents a significant addition to the existing programs in economics (WiWi) and business education (WiPäd). The aim of the initiative is to open up targeted paths in business, administration, politics and science for young people. Prof. Dr. Philipp Harms, Vice Dean at the department, emphasizes the relevance of the new degree programs in the context of current challenges. In particular, the topics of digitalization, demographic change, geopolitical changes and sustainability will be discussed, which are of great importance for the design of the course content.
An open day will take place on June 26, 2025 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Interested visitors have the opportunity to take advantage of advisory services, gain insights into department life and talk to students and teachers. The new programs are geared towards clear profiles with in-depth specialization and interdisciplinary perspectives, giving students a flexible start to their professional lives.
Structure of the study programs
The bachelor's degree programs at JGU are designed in such a way that they consist of an introductory module in the first semester and five further modules from the third semester onwards. Students can choose from a variety of fields of study that are characterized by an interdisciplinary focus. These include, among other things, areas such as work and human resources, data science and business intelligence as well as digitalization, innovation and entrepreneurship. Students have the opportunity to choose between different areas of study, including business administration and economics, in order to prepare for specific areas of work or to work towards special master's programs.
In addition, the new WiPäd trial is an innovative model that combines bachelor's, master's and traineeships. This program is aimed at prospective teachers at vocational schools in Bavaria and enables students to earn money and gain practical experience during their studies.
Career prospects and perspectives
The career paths for graduates of bachelor's degrees in other interdisciplinary economics are diverse and offer opportunities in almost all sectors of the private sector as well as in the public service.
