New momentum for students: First-time vice-presidency in Trier!

On March 9, 2025, it was announced that Leonhard Székessy would head the General Student Committee (AStA) at the University of Trier. His election is a sign of the growing student participation at the university. In this context, many students are looking forward to the opportunities that arise from greater participation in decision-making processes. The importance of coordination between the new student leadership and existing representatives such as the AStA is emphasized.

A central element in student participation is the introduction of the first student vice-presidency in Rhineland-Palatinate. However, this still needs to be confirmed by the Ministry of Science and Health in Mainz. Applications for the presidency are expected to begin in the second half of the year, and all students at the University of Trier can apply for this position.

Election process and distribution of tasks

The selection process for the presidency is carried out in close cooperation with the student parliament (StuPa). The University Senate ultimately has to make the electoral decision. The president's term of office is one year and he can be re-elected once. The incumbents receive compensation for their expenses, and study leave is also possible.

The student body at the University of Trier is regulated as a corporation under public law in the State Higher Education Act. It is self-managed and charges a contribution of 16 euros per semester to finance its activities. The AStA acts as the executive branch of the student body and is divided into 12 departments and working groups, including the campus radio and AK Sport. The main speakers are elected by the StuPa and general assemblies.

The role of the student parliament

The StuPa has 25 seats and is elected annually by the students. Its task is to approve financial expenditure over 1000 euros and to make binding decisions for the AStA and the student councils. The StuPa elections take place in the first week of December and are organized by an election committee. There are both central elections and department-specific elections for direct mandates.

The student councils represent the students of a subject and are independent of the AStA or StuPa. They elect the student councils, which then become active in the Autonomous Student Councils Meeting (AFaT) and can apply for funds. This structure guarantees that students have a voice in all relevant decisions.

Overall, it can be seen that the student representatives at the University of Trier and the self-administration anchored in the state higher education law play an important role in the academic community. Representing students' interests towards university management, politics and other organizations is essential for improving study conditions and promoting cultural and social activities.
