Physics competition in Kaiserslautern: Young people experiment like professionals!

The Rhineland-Palatinate Technical University of Kaiserslautern-Landau (RPTU) will host the 3rd round of the state physics competition from May 26th to 28th, 2025. Around 20 students in grades 10 and 11 from various high schools in Rhineland-Palatinate will take part in this prestigious competition. How rptu.de reported, in the final round the participants are asked to present a homework paper and carry out two experiments in the laboratory.

The evaluation of the achievements is weighted equally in the areas of experimentation, colloquium and homework. The winner of the competition receives not only the glory, but also an invitation to an internship in the physics department of the RPTU. In workshops, participants are trained in wave optics, measurement techniques and practical work in the physics laboratory. Informative insights into current research projects such as 3D microprinting with light and ultracold quantum gases are also on the program.

Competition structure and objectives

The state physics competition aims to encourage students to deal more intensively with physics problems that go beyond regular lessons. The requirements are high: In addition to writing a term paper, participants are also expected to be able to develop independent solutions and present them clearly. dpg-physik.de emphasizes that experimentation, planning and documentation play a central role.

The competition is divided into three rounds, with the first round taking place from September to December. The second round runs from early February to mid-March, followed by the third round, which usually takes place in a university town at the end of May. In the first round, group work of up to three participants is permitted, which gives the students the opportunity to work on solutions together.

Promoting talented people in physics

In addition to the competitions, the RPTU offers programs to promote gifted students. Students are exposed to modern physics techniques, such as conducting experiments in the clean room and producing their own 3D prints. As part of the Mint EC camp, there are also exciting lectures on topics such as black holes and quantum physics. physics.rptu.de emphasizes that such events not only impart theoretical knowledge, but also offer practical insights into the everyday work of physicists.

The implementation of the competition is significantly supported by various institutions, including the Ministry of Education in Rhineland-Palatinate and the Heraeus Foundation. The organization is carried out by a team of volunteer physics teachers who create and correct the tasks. This commitment is crucial for the high quality of the competition tasks and the participation of interested students at national level.

This event not only challenges participants, but also provides them with a platform to deepen their scientific skills and interests. For many, the competition is a springboard into a possible career in physics or related sciences.
