RPTU Kaiserslautern sets new standards for gender equality!

The Rhineland-Palatinate Technical University of Kaiserslautern-Landau (RPTU) has joined the University Rectors' Conference (HRK)'s voluntary commitment “Towards greater gender equality in appointments”. The University Senate decided to join on July 9, 2025 as part of the new equal opportunities plan. This commitment aims to strengthen equitable appointment processes and promote an academic culture that focuses on both excellence and diversity. rptu.de reports that the RPTU has been pursuing a strategically oriented equality policy for years.

The current status of female professorships at the RPTU shows that the proportion is in line with the national average, while in some areas, particularly for W3 professorships, the proportion is higher than for W2 professorships. Joining the HRK voluntary commitment is seen as an important addition to the university's existing catalog of measures and includes nationally agreed standards.

Central areas of action and measures

The HRK voluntary commitment identifies central areas of action that are necessary for a fairer distribution of professorships. This includes:

  • Faire Karrierewege und transparente Berufungsverfahren
  • Strategisches Personalmanagement für Chancengerechtigkeit
  • Strukturelle Verankerung von Gleichstellung und Vielfalt
  • Systematisches Monitoring und regelmäßige Berichterstattung
  • Kontinuierliche Evaluation und Weiterentwicklung

The implementation of these goals is carried out as part of the RPTU's equality plan, which defines central goals, measures and structures for sustainable equality work. The equality plan can be accessed online. Joining the HRK initiative makes it clear that equality is seen as an integral part of personnel and university development at the RPTU.

Background to the HRK voluntary commitment

In May 2024, the HRK general meeting passed the resolution on the voluntary commitment with the aim of reducing structural gender inequalities and ensuring appropriate gender representation in professorships. The main goals of the resolution include cultural and structural change towards greater gender equality and the active recruitment of women in early scientific career phases in order to expand the circle of candidates for appointment. hrk.de describes concrete recommendations for establishing more gender-equitable appointment procedures and remuneration structures.

In addition, the aim is to anchor gender sensitization institutionally, as well as consistent monitoring of the measures taken to ensure the implementation of the goals. Universities are called upon to introduce their own instruments for equal gender distribution in professorships and to document them in the publicly accessible database of the Competence Center for Women in Science and Research (CEWS).

The progressive steps taken by the RPTU and the HRK voluntary commitment promise a profound change in the appointment procedures and gender equality within the German university landscape.
