RPTU launches AI Compass: Revolution in teaching for students!
On July 29, 2025, the focus will be on the progressive integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into the academic world. The RPTU has launched an innovative “AI compass” that will be introduced for all first-year students in the winter semester of 2025/26. This program aims to systematically integrate AI topics into teaching and thus introduce students to fundamental concepts, areas of application and social issues surrounding AI.
The AI Compass teaching unit takes place as part of the orientation week and combines face-to-face formats with digital in-depth offerings. The focus is on the technical basics and a reflective approach to the technology. Topics such as available tools, opportunities and limitations of AI, data protection, fairness and scientific integrity are comprehensively covered. Professor Dr. Malte Drescher, President of the RPTU, emphasizes that the AI Compass offers students a space for reflection in which to deal with ethical issues and current research results. This concept is underpinned by collaboration with leading research institutions such as the DFKI and the Max Planck Society.
Interdisciplinary exchange and certificate course
Another important component of the AI Compass is the “AI, Computing & Society” initiative, which promotes an interdisciplinary exchange about the social effects of AI. A certificate course is also planned that is open to all RPTU students, regardless of their field of study. This course will have a modular structure and include basics, practical applications and reflection phases.
Students should be able to acquire ECTS points in order to obtain a targeted qualification in the AI area. For further information, contact the RPTU and Professor Dr. Sven O. Krumke, Chief Digital Officer, is available.
Ethics and human rights-compliant AI
An important topic in the field of artificial intelligence are ethical questions, which are also raised by the UNESCO be taken up. This has developed a recommendation for the ethical use of AI, which is based on international law. Its aim is to respect, defend and promote human rights and fundamental freedoms.
The development process for this influential recommendation took two years and included numerous intergovernmental negotiations as well as the involvement of expert groups and regional stakeholder hearings. It provides a global frame of reference for all states, focusing on values such as privacy, transparency and non-discrimination.
The recommendation also requires that the benefits and risks of AI systems be assessed through an ethical impact assessment. This is intended to help avoid one-sided discrimination in the technology industry and promote diversity. In addition, a close connection between environmental protection and the sustainable use of AI is required. The German UNESCO Commission is developing concrete approaches to implementing these ethical guidelines in collaboration with experts.
Overall, it shows that the RPTU and UNESCO are pursuing a responsible and future-oriented approach to the integration of artificial intelligence. At a time when AI is increasingly having an impact on everyday life, promoting reflective and ethically responsible use is crucial.
