Trier University strengthens international ties in Taiwan: A new chapter!

A delegation from Trier University recently visited Taiwan to strengthen academic relations. Under the leadership of university president Prof. Dr. Eva Martha Eckkrammer, around twenty colleagues from eight different areas of the university took part in the trip. The aim of the visit was to explore future collaborations and intensify existing connections.

During the stay in Taiwan, the collaboration with the National Chengchi University (NCCU) was fleshed out. Meetings were also held with representatives from National Taiwan University (NTU) and Tamkang University (TKU). These discussions laid the foundation for student exchanges and joint activities between the institutions.

Academic exchange and conferences

An important part of the visit was participation in the international conference “Human Values and Social Transformations in the Age of AI”, which took place at NCCU. The delegation also had the opportunity to explore historical landmarks, including the Human Rights Memorial Park on Green Island. During the talks with Taiwanese partners, the delegation was optimistic about future prospects despite the rainy weather.

On the occasion of the visit, a cooperation agreement was signed between the presidents of the NTU and the University of Trier. This agreement supports the exchange of students and is intended to further advance the university's internationally oriented policies.

The University of Trier in an international context

The University of Trier is one of the most important universities in Germany, with around 12,000 students and a distinctive profile in the humanities and social sciences. In addition, the university is characterized by strong natural science focuses in spatial and environmental sciences as well as clinically oriented psychology, which is one of the largest institutions of its kind in Germany. Well-developed departments such as economics and law as well as specialized subjects such as Japanese studies and Chinese studies also complement the offering.

The university's international orientation includes over 190 exchange agreements with universities in Europe and around 40 other institutions worldwide, including in the USA, Canada, Australia, Japan and China. This internationalization is in line with the goals of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), which wants to secure and expand the attractiveness and competitiveness of German universities. In 2023, there were a total of 18,153 international collaborations between 312 universities in Germany.

A central goal of the strategy for the internationalization of universities, which was adopted in the summer of 2024, is to reduce hurdles for attracting and integrating international students and to provide them with high-quality experiences in an international environment. The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) promotes these efforts and supports, among other things, structured student exchanges and research-oriented collaborations.

The intensive efforts of the University of Trier and the responsibility of the BMBF create a future-oriented basis for further international cooperation. The positive response to the visit to Taiwan is evidence of the university's commitment to global academic networking.
