WHU First Responder: Quick help saves lives in Vallendar!

The WHU – Otto Beisheim School of Management achieved impressive results with its “WHU First Responder” program last year. Over 200 emergency operations were carried out, including twelve resuscitations. These achievements are not only a testament to the students' commitment, but also show the importance of quick help in critical situations. A quick response can be life-saving in the event of a heart attack or stroke, while the emergency services usually only arrive after around 15 minutes. Tom Augustin, an International Business Administration student, has already resuscitated two people in this context and emphasizes the importance of team cohesion in order to be able to provide effective help.

The initiative, which currently has 30 active and 619 passive members, has also organized three blood donation days, during which a total of 231 new blood units were collected. The newly founded supervisory board ensures that knowledge and contacts are retained and can be passed on to new members. Three more blood donation days as well as support for WHU events and the cardiac sports group in Vallendar are also planned for 2025.

Planned blood donation days

A special focus is on the next blood donation day, which will be organized on December 3rd by the WHU First Responders in cooperation with the German Red Cross. This takes place in the C building of the WHU and is open from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Those interested can take note of the following conditions of participation:

  • Mindestgewicht: 50 kg
  • Mindestalter: 18 Jahre
  • Keine schweren Erkrankungen

The course of the event involves participants registering at the entrance and filling out a questionnaire. An examination is then carried out by experienced doctors before the actual blood donation of 500 ml is carried out in the donation room. After the donation, donors can relax in the relaxation room. Pre-registration is possible and shortens the waiting time, but is not mandatory.

The ongoing activities of the WHU First Responders show how students are not only academically but also socially active and take on responsibility in their community. This initiative helps raise awareness of the importance of first responders and blood donations, while providing a platform for personal development and engagement.
