WHU sets new standards: promoting sustainability in business education!

As part of global efforts to promote responsible management education and sustainability, WHU – Otto Beisheim School of Management has made significant progress. The university has been a member of the UN Initiative for Responsible Management Education, known as PRME (Principles for Responsible Management Education), since 2013. This initiative encompasses 850 institutions worldwide and has the central goal of making business and management education more sustainable and strengthening the sense of responsibility of future managers.

WHU has submitted its annual report, the Sharing Information on Progress, to document its progress in the areas of sustainability, ethics and good governance. As part of its efforts to anchor sustainability in its strategy, WHU has founded its own Sustainability Management Center and created special leadership positions.

Ambitious climate goals and transparency

Particular attention is paid to WHU's ambitious climate goals: the university wants to achieve net zero emissions for Scope 1 and 2 by 2025 and for Scope 3 by 2035. In the interests of transparency, WHU systematically reports on its carbon footprint and actively invests in green infrastructure. WHU Rector Prof. Dr. Christian Andres emphasizes that sustainability is a shared responsibility in teaching, research and collaboration.

University teaching not only promotes the personal development of students. Ethics, responsibility and sustainability are also an integral part of the curricula. In research, WHU combines academic excellence with practical relevance and addresses ecological, social and economic challenges. To further support sustainable development, WHU has launched strategic partnerships, including co-founding the Alliance for Environmental Responsibility in Business Schools (AERO).

Worldwide recognition through rankings

In a broader context of management education, ESCP Business School has also achieved notable successes. Her Executive MBA (EMBA) was ranked #3 worldwide and #1 in Europe in the Financial Times Ranking 2025. This is the third consecutive year the program has achieved this top ranking. In addition, the ESCP is ranked first worldwide for Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) and Net Zero Teaching.

The rankings reflect ESCP's commitment to effective and sustainable business practices. Prof. Francesco Venuti, Associate Dean of the Executive MBA, highlights the transformative experience offered by the program, which focuses heavily on strategic insights and human values. Manon Marinière, Director of the Executive MBA, is proud of the results and attributes them to the passion of the participants, the excellence of the faculty and the strength of the global community.

With its involvement in the PRME initiative, WHU also supports the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In 2022, WHU was the first German business school to receive the Business School Impact System (BSIS) certificate, which will be renewed in 2025. The WHU progress report is available for download on the WHU Social Impact website and documents the university's ongoing efforts in the area of sustainable management education.

Overall, these developments at WHU and ESCP show that responsible management education and sustainability not only present challenges, but also offer opportunities for innovation and growth that will shape future generations of leaders.
