Future-oriented learning: How digital solutions are changing the world of work!
Technological progress and digital transformation are changing the demands placed on employees in many industries, especially in retail. At the RPTU, master's students in economics work on practical solutions to promote lifelong learning for employees who do not work in the office. This initiative is part of the transfer project of the Open Digitalization Alliance Palatinate, which is led by Professor Tanja Rabl and Michaela Roßmeier. The project concluded in July 2023, when the students presented their ideas, which were developed through interviews and analyzes of the internal processes in the Wasgau markets, at a co-creative bar camp.
The challenges in the modern working environment require new approaches to learning. The aim of the project is to integrate meaningful and motivating learning methods that are directly embedded in the employees' everyday work. Eight student teams used the design thinking approach to develop innovative solutions. These included, among other things, AI-supported knowledge databases and learning apps with gamification that are intended to make learning more entertaining and effective.
Diverse learning concepts
During the Barcamp, the students had the opportunity to visualize their prototypes - including those made from Lego® - and to obtain feedback from Wasgau employees. The concepts that emerged from this collaboration also include learning reward systems, competency boards and learning buddy structures. These ideas were reflected on in terms of their learning effectiveness, feasibility and acceptance and show promising elements for a sustainable learning culture. This co-creative exchange between university and practice was considered extremely fruitful.
The importance of lifelong learning is not limited to this project. Lifelong learning has been identified as crucial to the future of work. In this context, the federal government initiated the “Qualification Opportunities Act”, which aims to promote further training. A position paper by leading German companies and the Hans Böckler Foundation highlights important recommendations for action, such as the introduction of further training BAföG and greater use of AI-based learning systems. These recommendations are part of a broader strategy to meet the demands of the digital world of work and promote qualified personnel.
Sustainability through lifelong learning
The concept of lifelong learning goes beyond the acquisition of knowledge; it also includes improving skills in social and professional contexts. For companies, employees who are willing to continuously develop themselves are a valuable resource for innovation and growth. But learning is not only important for your professional career. It also promotes personal development and corporate competitiveness.
Companies also face the challenge of designing further training for employees, especially older people. An exchange between young and old is of great importance here. Lifelong learning can be seen as a challenge, but the benefits are clear: it improves career prospects and enables flexibility and adaptability to change.
In a future where school knowledge quickly becomes outdated, the ability to continue learning will become essential. Companies that support this development will be more successful in the long term and motivate their employees to learn and apply new things.
