Information day for new students: Discover the future of the humanities!
On October 6, 2025, the information day for first-year students of the bachelor's and teaching degree programs in the Faculty of Philosophy at Saarland University will take place. This event starts at 9 a.m. and offers a comprehensive introduction to various subjects and helpful tips for studying. According to Saarland University, an extensive program is offered, which includes, among other things, lectures on subjects that cover the broad spectrum of the humanities.
Subjects presented during the information day include classical studies, English studies, American studies, German-French studies, digital humanities, German studies, history and art and visual studies. Particularly noteworthy is the presentation of the Center for Teacher Training, which will take place from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. in the music hall (building C5 1). Afterwards, the central examination office for teaching will also be present in this room from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Diverse information offerings
The Student Office of the Faculty of Humanities invites bachelor students to an event at 10:30 a.m. in Building B3 2, Lecture Hall 0.03. Further informative lectures include topics such as “Career goals in studying the humanities” at 11:30 a.m. in building B3 1, as well as “Working alongside your studies” at 2 p.m. in the same rooms. Students can also find out about stays abroad during bachelor's and teacher training programs at 1:15 p.m.
In addition, from 12.30 p.m. there will be 1 information stands in building B3 presenting various offers, including the study office, the career center, the university office of the employment agency, the “GoOut!” service center, the Saarland University and State Library (SULB), university sports and the student health management “fit4more”. A campus rally is being offered for those interested, starting at 11:15 a.m. and 1:15 p.m. in front of building B3 1.
University members who are interested in studying and imparting their knowledge are cordially invited to attend these events. Nina Recktenwald, study coordinator in the study office of the Faculty of Humanities, is available for further information. Difficult times for the humanities
In contrast, other areas of study experienced significant growth. The total number of first-time enrollees increased from 377,500 in 2003 to 482,000 in 2023, an increase of 28%. There were increases of 39% in law, economics, social sciences and engineering, while the number of new students in mathematics and natural sciences increased by 13%. Particularly in the field of human medicine and health sciences, the number of new enrollees reached a record level, doubling to over 28,100 first-year students in 2023.
With these challenges in mind, the information day at Saarland University is of almost strategic importance in order to introduce potential students to the advantages and opportunities of an education in the humanities and possibly counteract the trend.
