Saar-Uni wins platinum label for sustainable health promotion!
On July 21, 2025, Saarland University was awarded the “Healthy Campus” label in platinum. This honor, awarded by the FISU (International University Sports Federation), recognizes the university's comprehensive commitment to promoting the health of students. A total of nine German universities received this award, which was given in recognition of their initiatives to promote a healthy lifestyle. Around 85 universities from 43 countries worldwide carry the “Healthy Campus” label.
Saar University played a key role with its student health management program “fit4more – study healthy”. A new course-accompanying module certificate entitled “Health Competencies: Study Healthily – Live Healthily” will be offered from the winter semester 2024/25. This certificate aims to develop sustainable health skills that are important both in studies and in professional life.
Diverse topics and evaluation
The content of the certificate covers aspects such as exercise, nutrition and mental health. Study results on topics such as test anxiety and healthy sleep will be incorporated into the program design. The scientific evaluation of the project will be carried out by the university's Medical Faculty. Student health management is implemented in collaboration with various partners from the university and the Techniker Krankenkasse.
In order to receive the Healthy Campus label, 100 individual points had to be asked and assessed during a self-evaluation. Topics assessed included healthy university management, nutrition, corporate health management, occupational health and safety, sustainability and mental and social health.
A significant event
The official award ceremony took place at the World Conference in Bochum, where university president Ludger Santen and Rolf Schlicher accepted the award. The awarding of the Healthy Campus label coincides with the FISU World University Games 2025, which will take place in the greater Rhine-Ruhr area in North Rhine-Westphalia. This multi-sport event is the largest after the Olympic and Para-Olympic Games and attracts 8,500 athletes from all over the world. Saarland University will be represented by four athletes.
According to a report from FISU, the Healthy Campus program leaves a lasting legacy. The initiative was launched with the aim of improving the health and well-being of students and staff. It includes a network of 30 student health experts and promotes a holistic view of health that includes fitness, mental health, nutrition, social responsibility and sustainability. Company goals are to collect and disseminate best practices, improve images through international certificates and contribute to the UN Sustainability Goals (SDGs).
The FISU Healthy Campus platform allows universities to register to participate in the program. The digital platform makes it easier to track and improve the health of students and employees at universities.
