Saar University appoints Nagashima as Henriette Herz Scout!

On June 27, 2025, Tomohiro Nagashima was named a “Henriette Herz Scout” by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation. Nagashima is a junior professor of computer science at Saarland University and now has the opportunity to nominate three scientific talents from abroad for a research scholarship. After a formal review of applications, these fellows can conduct research at the university for between six months and two years, representing a significant step for international research collaborations.

Nagashima leads a research group that focuses intensively on human-computer interaction, learning sciences and cognitive sciences. Its goal is to support and understand human learning through the use of advanced technologies. The group works closely with teachers and students to develop new learning technologies that are tailored to the needs of learners.

International research scholarships

The international postdocs who are supported by the scholarship receive a high degree of freedom and flexibility in choosing their topics. Nagashima expressly welcomes applicants from a wide range of disciplines, not only from computer science, but also from design, psychology and cognitive science. This diverse spectrum is intended to promote innovation in the field of AI-based learning technologies.

Research at the Saarland Informatics Campus (SIC) is characterized by an internationally oriented community. The SIC is home to over 1,000 scientists, including 540 doctoral candidates and around 2,800 students from over 80 nations. This reflects the high attractiveness of Saarland University, which is considered a leading location for computer science in Germany and Europe.

Research focus in the field of HCI

At the Humboldt University in Berlin, a variety of topics are addressed in the field of human-computer interaction (HCI), which also complement Nagashima's research interests. Among other things, the design and application of interfaces as well as the use of artificial intelligence to analyze cognitive load and emotions are examined here. In addition, developments of adaptive intelligent user interfaces and new interaction technologies for virtual and augmented reality are being evaluated. These topics are of central importance for the further development of interactive learning environments, which are also being considered at the SIC.

The interdisciplinary collaboration between different research institutions is also evident at other locations, such as Rheinische-Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn. This university has made a name for itself through its research in cybersecurity, theoretical computer science and artificial intelligence. Since summer 2019, it has been one of the eleven German universities of excellence and has received special recognition for its pioneering projects.

The combination of current research activities in the areas of human-computer interaction, artificial intelligence and learning technologies shows how scientists in Germany are working to use state-of-the-art technologies for educational purposes and to promote international networks and collaborations.
