With the start of the 2025 winter semester, Saarland University has seen an increase in student numbers to a total of 16,114. This represents an increase compared to the previous year, when 16,031 students were enrolled. The positive trend is primarily due to an increase in the number of doctoral students, which rose from 2,627 to 2,785, as well as the growth of further education students, whose number rose from 834 to 1,034. Despite these positive developments, however, there is a decline in the number of first-year students, who currently number 2,304, fewer than in the previous year, when 2,491 first-year students were enrolled.
The number of international students has also increased: around 3,787 foreign students are enrolled at the university, which represents an increase of 177 compared to the previous year. This means that international students make up around 24% of the total. The final statistical status of enrollments will be published on November 30th. University President Ludger Santen opened the academic year and expressed optimism about the developments.
New courses and further training
The winter semester of 2025 also offers an exciting selection of new bachelor's and master's degree programs. Among other things, the programs “Advance Practice Nursing”, “Cultural Studies and Management”, “Digital Sciences for Transformation”, “Physiotherapy” and “Sustainable Materials and Engineering” will be introduced.
