Future of medicine: Exciting lectures on the Saarbrücken campus!
On July 7, 2025, important public events are scheduled at Saarland University as part of the lecture series. In the 29th calendar week, two lectures will take place that deal with special cultural and historical topics.
The first lecture in this series is the Käte Hamburger Lecture, which will take place on Wednesday, July 16th, at 6:15 p.m. in the Innovation Center, Saarbrücken Campus, building A2 1, seminar room 3.05.1. The speaker is Diana Rodríguez Vértiz, a fellow at the Käte Hamburger Center for Cultural Practices of Reparation (CURE). Her talk, titled “Luis Hernández Camarero: A Medical (Po)ethics,” focuses on the poetic notebooks of Peruvian physician Luis Hernández and their influence on the fields of medicine and justice. The goal is to address the honor of those affected by pain and to discuss how healing can be promoted within a biomedical practice that is in need of repair. The event will also be broadcast online; registration is required at kontakt(at)khk.uni-saarland.de. Additional information is available on the university's website, which also provides further details about the two lectures.
Classical Studies Colloquium
The second lecture will take place on Thursday, July 17th, at 6:15 p.m. in building B3 1, room 1.30. Rogier van der Heijden, M.A. from the Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg, will speak on the topic “Beyond Calendars. A Sociological and Archaeological Perspective on Imperial Time Experiences in Roman Arabia.” This theme addresses the complex experiences of time and empire in the Roman context and promises to offer deeper insights into the cultural practices of societies at the time.
The events are part of the university's ongoing efforts to persuasively present current and specific research and invite public discussion. Additionally, there is a history of collaboration between CURE and the university, which held its first annual conference last year under the theme “Theoretical Access to Cultural Practices of Reparation.” This took place from June 4th to 6th, 2025 in the same location, with Rukmini Bhaya Nair, among others, appearing as a keynote speaker and speaking about the decolonization of narratives.
The Käte Hamburger Lectures aim to provide insights into Fellows' latest research perspectives in the field of cultural practices of repair. These lectures open up discussions about the key elements that shape the repair discourse in various social contexts. It is expected that there will be an in-depth discussion with the audience after each lecture. The interdisciplinary format of the lectures promotes exchange between different scientific areas and the general public.
