Festival of Science: MLU awards prizes and Luther certificates!
The Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg (MLU) is hosting a ceremony to honor doctoral candidates and habilitation candidates on Friday, April 25, 2025. This important event will begin at 1:30 p.m. in the National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina. As part of these celebrations, young scientists who graduate with the title “summa cum laude” receive the Luther certificate from MLU. In addition, university prizes are awarded for outstanding scientific work, such as Press releases from the University of Halle report.
Rector Prof. Dr. Claudia Becker will welcome the graduates and give a keynote speech by Prof. Dr. Elisabeth Décultot on the topic “Science, Power, Politics: A question of the price of the Enlightenment and its topicality”. This event is not only a formal honor, but also an opportunity to showcase MLU's infrastructure and its commitment to science to those who have made significant contributions in their fields.
Award ceremonies for outstanding achievements
The Dorothea Erxleben Prizes 2025 will also be awarded as part of the ceremony, with an award of 1,000 euros each. The award winners are:
- Dr. Lena Sophie Leffer für ihre Dissertation über „Automated Suspicion Algorithms“.
- Dr. Justus Friedrich Thümmler für seine Dissertation über „Near-Infrared Fluorescent Single-Chain Nanoparticles“.
Furthermore, the Anton Wilhelm Amo Prize 2025 worth 1,000 euros will be awarded to Kathrin Lisa Plass for her master's thesis on “Double photoemission of C60 on SrTiO3”. Pratyaksh Singh will receive the DAAD Prize 2025, also worth 1,000 euros, for his academic achievements and his social commitment.
The celebration that follows includes a network meeting of the Germany scholarship holders and their sponsors in the Lion Building on Universitätsplatz. The annual reception of the university and the Association of Friends and Supporters of the University also takes place exclusively for invited guests in the MLU auditorium. Media representatives are invited to a reception at 5 p.m.
Diverse supporting program
An additional highlight of the day is a lecture by Prof. Dr. Andreas Petrik on “The art of tolerating what we find stupid: social cohesion and political education”. Visitors to the event can also take part in a public large spring concert, which will take place in Handel Hall from 8 p.m. and will be performed by various university orchestras and choirs. However, it should be noted that the concert is already fully booked, but ticket returns are possible.
The events take place at the following locations:
– Ceremony: National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina, Jägerberg 1, 06108 Halle (Saale).
– Big spring concert: Georg-Friedrich-Händel-Halle, Salzgrafenplatz 1, 06108 Halle (Saale).

In order to obtain a doctorate at a German university such as MLU, an academic degree is required. Common qualifications are master, state examination, diploma or magister. In some cases, admission with a bachelor's degree is also possible, provided that an appropriate qualification procedure has been successfully completed, such as University Compass explained. It should be emphasized that a doctorate represents an independent research achievement that contributes significantly to the progress of scientific knowledge.
