Children's University Magdeburg: Discover democracy in a playful way on June 14th!
The Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg is hosting a children's university on June 14, 2025 as part of the Long Night of Science with the topic “What is democracy?” This exciting event is aimed at primary school students and is intended as a contribution to the political education of young people. In his lecture, political scientist Prof. Michael Böcher will explain how politics works and the importance of co-determination. A fictitious election experiment is planned through which the children can playfully learn about the processes involved in democratic processes. The event begins at 5:00 p.m. and ends at 6:00 p.m. in lecture hall 6 of the Otto von Guericke University, Campus Zschokkestrasse, Building 44. Participation is free of charge, but registration is requested in order to be able to better plan the space available. From 6:00 p.m., a wide range of programs will be available until midnight as part of the Long Night of Science, which includes lectures, experiments and hands-on activities in various areas of science. The Magdeburg Children's University has existed since 2003 and has already involved over 20,000 students in more than 100 lectures unimagazin.ovgu.de reported.
The issue of democracy education is particularly important to the Conference of Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs (KMK). The aim of school education is to prepare young people for the challenges of a modern society, including the competent assessment of political, social and economic issues. Values such as freedom, human rights, justice and peace are the focus here. These principles should be promoted through a holistic approach to teaching, particularly in social science subjects kmk.org highlights.
