Magdeburg is focusing on the future: New AI laboratory opens!
On March 8, 2025, the Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg opened the doors to its new experimental laboratory for artificial intelligence. Called the AI Co-Working Lab, it is aimed at scientists from eight research groups. Their common goal is to strengthen collaboration between humans and machines in production.
The lab offers a future-oriented open data research infrastructure with state-of-the-art technology and is designed for a research period of 36 months. The focus is on developing new models for flexible, adaptable teams. A central aspect is the development of methods for testing the security and trustworthiness of AI systems. In the future, these should not only support people's tasks, but also be able to act with foresight and recognize human intentions.
The vision of human-machine symbiosis
Until now, machines have carried out fixed steps in their work, similar to an orchestra. However, the vision of the AI Co-Working Lab is for machines to learn to adapt and not just follow commands, but to act proactively. This is intended to relieve the burden on employees, save resources and create sustainable and flexible production.
The first series of tests in this innovative environment are scheduled to be carried out in 2026 to test the flexibility and efficiency of the systems developed. The project is funded by the Investment Bank of Saxony-Anhalt, which is providing 2.2 million euros under the ERDF - European Regional Development Fund program. In the long term, the laboratory should strive to strengthen interdisciplinary collaboration and establish new collaborations with other universities and industry.
Ethics and responsibility in artificial intelligence
In the context of the rapid development of AI, the German Ethics Council raises fundamental questions in its statement of March 20, 2023. The use of digital technologies and AI significantly influences how we define ourselves and our togetherness. He asks the crucial question: Does this effort expand or diminish human authorship and the conditions for responsible action?
The analysis revealed that AI applications not only permeate our living environment, but also have profound social effects. The Ethics Council focuses on four fundamental areas of application in which the ethical challenges are particularly significant:
- Medizin
- Schulische Bildung
- Öffentliche Kommunikation und Meinungsbildung
- Öffentliche Verwaltung
Important ethical issues in AI development concern transparency, responsibility and ensuring fairness. Current research focuses on the need for AI systems to make decisions understandable in order to ensure user trust.
Some of the concerns raised around AI include privacy, loss of autonomy, transparency of decisions and the risk of misuse. It is crucial that stakeholders from computer science, law, ethics and civil society are involved in the development of ethical guidelines.
In this context, ongoing ethics training for developers and users of AI technologies is essential. This also includes promoting public discussions about the ethical dimensions that go hand in hand with responsible use of AI.
In view of these developments and challenges, continuous engagement with ethical issues is crucial for responsible AI development. The challenges are complex and the creation of universal ethical standards remains a dynamic task. The connection between technological progress and ethical awareness will therefore continue to be of central importance in the future.
With the AI Co-Working Lab, the Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg is not only setting new standards in technological research, but is also actively contributing to the debate about the ethical implications of artificial intelligence, as the German Ethics Council has also stated in its studies.
