20 years of KiSS Chemnitz: A celebration for sporty children and parents!
The Chemnitz Children's Sports School (KiSS), which was founded on June 1, 2005, has developed into a crucial institution in physical education for children since its founding. Today the facility, located in the gym and sports field at Kleinolbersdorfer Straße 61 in Adelsberg, offers extensive programs tailored to children aged 6 months to 11 years. The founder Katrin Adler, who was a research assistant at the Chemnitz University of Technology at the time, wanted to give children the joy of movement, games and sport and at the same time promote their motor skills. Since then, over 10,000 children from the Chemnitz region have benefited from the offerings of KiSS, which currently has over 800 members in the children's and youth sector.
Significant cross-departmental support comes from 23 volunteer trainers, with 90% of these specialists coming from Chemnitz University of Technology. They are involved in 60 different children's sports courses that take place at eight locations. In addition, five graduates from Chemnitz University of Technology are permanently employed at KiSS.
Diverse offerings and academic support
KiSS offers a wide range of activities, including more than ten different sports. These include football, athletics, gymnastics, Frisbee, slackline and Friluftsliv. The institutional collaboration with Chemnitz University of Technology is particularly extensive. This includes, among other things, motor skills tests and various studies, such as the use of barefoot shoes. In addition, internships and trainer positions in the area of children's sports are regularly offered.
Research plays a crucial role in the quality and further development of the offering. This aims to control and improve the quality and content of the offering. KiSS supervises numerous theses from students at Chemnitz University of Technology and carries out its own studies and evaluations. Motor skills tests on the fitness of children aged 5 to 11 were carried out from 2009 to 2017, and a parent survey from 2012 analyzed parents' expectations and satisfaction with the children's sports school.
A significant anniversary and social relevance
On June 1, 2025, the children's sports school will celebrate its 20th anniversary. On this occasion, everyone interested is invited to take part in an event from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. in the Adelsberg sports hall. These celebrations underline the positive development and influence of KiSS on children in the region.
The social relevance of KiSS is also illustrated by studies by the Federal Ministry of Health. According to the results of the first MoMo study, conducted from 2003 to 2022, childhood and adolescence are crucial times for identity formation and dealing with different challenges. The study shows that physical sporting activities and good motor performance are essential for healthy development. The goal of the MoMo 2.0 project, which runs from 2022 to 2025, is to carry out a fourth nationally representative data collection to examine the exercise behavior of children and young people and thus understand social changes.
Overall, KiSS is an outstanding example of successful physical activity promotion in children, supported by scientific support and committed specialists.
