250 kilo bomb discovered in Chemnitz: exclusion zone affects thousands of citizens!

On March 25, 2025, a 250 kilogram aircraft bomb from the Second World War was discovered in Chemnitz. The discovery occurred on a property on Eigenhufe Street during construction work around 2:30 p.m. Workers came across the explosive ammunition and immediately alerted the explosive ordnance disposal service. He confirmed that it was a British bomb and initiated the necessary measures.

As a result, a 1,000 meter exclusion zone was set up around the site. This affects around 3,300 people from the districts of Altchemnitz, Erfenschlag, Reichenhain and Harthaus. These people must leave the restricted area by 9 a.m. on Wednesday morning, March 26, 2025 at the latest. Several roads in the area are affected by the closure, with the closures being partly complete and partly sectional. A detailed list of the affected streets and house numbers is available on the city of Chemnitz website, where further information is also provided.

Preparations for defusing

Access to the Erfenschlager Straße 73 university section of Chemnitz University of Technology will be closed from March 26, 2025, 9 a.m. University employees and students are requested to leave the premises by this time. In order to support those affected, it is recommended to use mobile work.

Overall, the bomb disposal service is preparing to defuse the bomb. The exact timing of the defusing is currently unknown, but security precautions are in full swing. The entire area around the site is cordoned off to ensure that no one is in the restricted area until it is defused.

A spokesman for the city of Chemnitz confirmed that the authorities are working closely to ensure the safety of all citizens and to ensure that the operation runs as quickly and smoothly as possible. The city informs citizens about all necessary measures. Further information can be found on the city's website, which also provides specific details about the emergency shelter.

The situation shows once again how important caution is when discovering remains of ammunition from the Second World War. Such finds are not uncommon in many cities in Germany. It therefore remains to be seen how the situation in Chemnitz will develop in terms of defusing and the safety of residents.
