Over 100 educational scientists and education experts from Germany and internationally will take part to discuss important questions in more than 50 workshops and lectures.

This forms the framework for a deeper examination of the role that education plays for social justice and social cohesion, especially with regard to a modern understanding of democracy. The tensions that exist in practice between theory and application are also discussed.

Education for Sustainable Development: A Global Concern

Education for Sustainable Development is a global United Nations initiative that aims to empower individuals to think and act for the future. This makes it possible to make sustainable decisions that promote local and global development processes. The Goal This educational campaign is to create a democratic, just and ecologically sustainable society.

The UNESCO program “Education for Sustainable Development: Towards achieving the SDGs” (ESD for 2030) has been running since 2020 and aims to achieve the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations. The focus is on Goal 4, which strives for high-quality education for everyone, with ESD anchored as an important sub-goal (sub-goal 4.7). This was also supported in Germany by the establishment of ESD forums and the National ESD Platform, which was launched in 2015.

The role of education in society

The conference at TU Dresden will deal intensively with the challenges and opportunities that ESD can offer in the context of current democratic developments. Dr. Edda Sant from the University of Manchester and Prof. Johannes Drerup from TU Dortmund are expected as keynote speakers to contribute their expertise to the discussion. The conference is organized by Dr. Antje Goller from the Faculty of Educational Sciences at TU Dresden.

ESD encompasses a variety of educational traditions, including environmental education and global learning, and draws on content and methods from natural, social and cultural sciences. The coordinating role of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) since 2015 has ensured that ESD is anchored in all areas of education and includes both informal learning and participatory methods.

The conference results are intended not only to contribute to research and practice in educational science, but also to serve as an impetus for future developments in educational policy, particularly with regard to the promotion of social justice and a well-founded democracy.
