Chemnitz 2025: Finnish delegation brings a breath of fresh air into culture!
On June 10, 2025, a delegation from the University of Oulu visited the Chemnitz University of Technology. This visit was part of the Chemnitz 2025 Capital of Culture year, which was launched as part of Chemnitz's designation as European Capital of Culture. Oulu will take on the role of Capital of Culture in 2026. The aim of the exchange was to explore possible collaborations and professional exchanges between the two institutions.
The Finnish delegation had found out about the TUCculture2025 projects in advance. Prof. Dr. Anja Strobel, Vice Rector of Chemnitz University of Technology, warmly welcomed the guests. The diverse program included a presentation of the TUCculture2025 projects as well as a tour in which creative formats were presented. The delegation was accompanied by Margreet Kneita and Katharina Wohlgemuth, while Stefan Schmidtke, Managing Director of the European Capital of Culture Chemnitz 2025 gGmbH, invited everyone present to a networking lunch in the Hartmannfabrik.
Cultural projects and their meaning
During the meeting, Dr. Julia Naunin and Prof. Dr. Jochen Mayerl insights into the project “The Larger Picture”. Dr. led a tour of the university library. Wolfgang Lambrecht through central exhibitions of the Capital of Culture year, including the exhibitions “Studying in the GDR” and “Tales of Transformation”. The experience and commitment of Chemnitz University of Technology to the Capital of Culture process was once again highlighted by Prof. Paula Rossi. The guests from the University of Oulu expressed great interest in further exchange and cooperation. Chemnitz University of Technology plans to continue the dialogue.
Chemnitz University of Technology was also commissioned to provide external academic support and evaluation of the “European Capital of Culture Chemnitz 2025”. This initiative, led by the Methods Competence Center under Prof. Dr. Jochen Mayerl, includes a comprehensive evaluation that began in summer 2023 and will run until the beginning of 2027. A before and after comparison and the collection of quantitative and qualitative data are carried out in order to analyze changes, learning processes and effects.
Projects to support the Capital of Culture
Overall, Chemnitz University of Technology has been supporting university project initiatives for Chemnitz 2025 since 2022 with a total volume of 100,000 euros. Seven significant projects are currently being implemented in partnership with Chemnitz 2025:

Art and culture play a central role in initiating sustainable changes in the world we live in, as developments in Chemnitz currently impressively show. The event and the initiatives of Chemnitz University of Technology demonstrate the commitment to a lively and dynamic culture that radiates beyond the city limits. Chemnitz has the opportunity to position itself as a high-performing region on the European map, which is further promoted by the Capital of Culture initiative. The commitment of various actors will make a decisive contribution to the positive perception of Chemnitz.
