Chemnitz: Cheapest city for students – shared rooms from just 265 euros!

In a comprehensive analysis by the Moses Mendelssohn Institute (MMI) in collaboration with WG-Gesucht.de, the rents for shared rooms in 88 German university cities with more than 5,000 students were examined. The results of this study show that Chemnitz is the cheapest location for students, with an average price of just 265 euros for a shared room. In comparison, the national average is 493 euros.

The price differences between cities are particularly noticeable. Students in Munich pay an average of 800 euros, while in Berlin the rent is around 650 euros, in Hamburg it is 610 euros and in Cologne it is 583 euros. These prices exceed the BAföG housing cost allowance of 380 euros, which is not the case in Chemnitz, where housing costs are below this threshold.

Market development and price increases

The latest survey shows a warning about rising prices in recent years. Compared to the previous semester, the costs for shared rooms rose by a national average of 4 euros, which corresponds to an increase of 0.9 percent. This is an increase of 14 euros or 2.8 percent compared to the previous year. Previously, in the winter semester of 2013/2014, the average price for shared rooms was 324 euros. The study was based on around 8,800 offers from WG-Gesucht.de and dealt with rooms in shared apartments with two to three residents.
