Chemnitz is looking for creative apple recipes for a joint project!

The Chemnitz University of Technology plays a central role in the Capital of Culture project “Lived Neighborhood”. This initiative aims to foster community by encouraging the collection and sharing of apple recipes. On July 9, 2025, the university announced that all members, relatives and alumni of Chemnitz University of Technology are invited to submit their best apple recipes. We are looking for creative recipe ideas for cakes, jam, soups and sweet toppings, which can be submitted by July 20, 2025. The best 25 recipes will be selected by a jury and exhibited in the Tietz event hall on October 19, 2025. The entire collection will also be available online, reinforcing the idea of community sharing. TU Chemnitz reports that Patricia Pötzsch, a graduate of the university and operator of the popular cooking blog “uhiesig”, supports the campaign. For further information please contact Dr. Stefanie Troppmann is available on 0371 531-39513 or by email.

But the initiative is not just limited to the exchange of recipes. Another important aspect of the project is the creation of an apple orchard that is open to the public. This should take place in the form of areas between houses, in backyards, orchards, school gardens or roof gardens. The organizers are actively looking for interested parties and planting professionals who are willing to plant at least five apple trees. The long-term goal is the ongoing care and nurturing of these trees. This includes tasks such as pruning the trees, regular watering and, if necessary, replanting as well as harvesting and using fallen fruit. Chemnitz 2025 highlights how important this care is for the sustainable use of the new apple orchards.

The importance of community and sustainability

The “Lived Neighborhood” project not only serves culinary enrichment, but also promotes social cohesion in Chemnitz’s urban society. Shared activities such as planting and caring for fruit trees strengthen neighborly relationships. The collected recipes are also intended to help create a culture of sharing and discovery in the region. This shows how simple, everyday actions can contribute to a better quality of life.

This initiative is a further step towards a vibrant and sustainable urban society. Both submitting recipes and planting apple trees invite all citizens to actively participate in shaping their environment. The result could be a beautiful, communal space for meeting and enjoying nature around fruit trees.
