Chemnitz Linux Days 2025: IT fans celebrate the return of the cult event!

The Chemnitz Linux Days, one of the most important events for the open source community, took place on March 22nd and 23rd, 2025 in the central lecture hall and seminar building at Chemnitz University of Technology. Under the theme “The Culture of Open Source,” the event attracted around 3,500 visitors, marking a return to pre-pandemic visitor numbers after a decline in recent years. The program of the Chemnitz Linux Days included 110 lectures, which took place in seven strands, as well as ten workshops. The topics ranged from virtualization and automation to artificial intelligence and social aspects of open source culture. Many events were very well attended, with up to 250 viewers watching the live streams of the lectures. The outstanding speakers included Phillip Blaschka, who presented a chatbot for the Robert Schumann House, and Constanze Czech, who presented the design of a relay computer. The new format of “Lightning Talks”, in which speakers gave five-minute contributions that met with great interest, attracted particular attention.

Workshops and junior programs

The workshops at the Chemnitz Linux Days were another highlight. Participants had the opportunity to explore topics such as creating websites with Hugo and programming in Shell or Python. There was a special CLT Junior program for children and young people aged ten and over, which included, among other things, working with Arduino and upcycling Neopixel LEDs. All workshops were already fully booked in advance. A soldering workshop also offered various kits, such as a blinking heart or a tic-tac-toe game, and thrilled participants with practical projects. The participation fees for these offers were five euros each.

Another innovative component of the event was the video streaming support of the Chaos Computer Club Video Operation Center (C3VOC), which made the recordings and slides of the lectures available on the website.

Striking reviews and future prospects

This event was the first to take place in an in-person format since the pandemic. In 2021 and 2022 the event was held digitally. The Chemnitz Linux Days were originally launched in 1999 with only 24 lectures and have since undergone impressive development. idw-online.de highlights that the event is an important meeting point for the open source community, which is concerned with communicating the fundamentals of open source culture and its influence on education and society.
