The floating tree house: cloud of books above the Kriebstein dam!
The innovative approach in the field of architecture is impressively demonstrated at the tree house hotel “Kriebelland” at the Kriebstein dam in Saxony. As part of the “Insulation Textile” project, a unique tree house is being built here that takes the shape of a cloud and floats eight meters high between three 120-year-old beech trees. Construction work for this special structure began in February 2021 and the project is led by the Institute for Lightweight Structural Engineering at Chemnitz University of Technology (TU Chemnitz). The collaboration with 3dtex GmbH, which is responsible for architectural planning, and Karsten Daedler e.K., responsible for processing tarpaulins, strengthens the specialist knowledge in the field of textile architecture. The entire project is also funded by the former Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Protection via the Central Innovation Program for SMEs (ZIM). TU Chemnitz reported.
The tree house, also called the “book cloud”, is an architectural masterpiece with a maximum size of 3.90 meters in external diameter and an internal area of around 6.50 square meters. It consists of six robust plywood beams and is equipped with a special construction of layer thicknesses and insulating materials that ensure optimal heat and sound insulation. These include materials such as expanded glass, airgel and perlite, which make the structure habitable all year round. The climatic conditions, which are influenced by the choice of material, are also taken into account. The project is expected to be completed in 2022, while the first series of tests are already dedicated to the mechanical resistance and climatic properties of the object. The use of translucent PES/PVC materials underlines the airy appearance of the building, while the structure simultaneously combines sustainability and modern living comfort.
A room for books and views
What's particularly appealing is the possibility that the tree house houses around 1,000 books donated by various guests. These can be enjoyed in the stylishly furnished interior with cushions and furs. Access to the “Book Cloud” is via a separate spiral staircase, which is not only practical but also enhances the experience of the stay. With intended use at temperatures of -20 to 40 degrees Celsius, the tree house is a place of relaxation and inspiration.
The differentiation of the sound insulation properties and the constant tests for heat and light permeability are fundamental parts of the ongoing research to ensure the quality of this innovative building. The combination of modern technology and the original tree house feeling creates a harmonious symbiosis of nature with progressive architecture. The unique design and engineering solution is provided by the cooperation partners of Chemnitz University of Technology, including zapf & co. – structural engineering GmbH, supports what further optimizes the load-bearing capacity and efficiency of the construction, such as 3dtex supplemented.
