Honorary coin for Prof. Kobel: Top researcher is committed to integration!

On March 22, 2025, Prof. Michael Kobel was awarded the City of Dresden's Medal of Honor. Dirk Hilbert, the mayor of Dresden, presented this honorable award during a festive ceremony. Kobel received the honor for his outstanding voluntary commitment, particularly for the integration of migrants into society.

Prof. Kobel has been a professor of particle physics at the Technical University of Dresden (TUD) since 2006 and took over the position of Vice Rector for Education in 2021. During the event, Rector Ursula Staudinger recognized not only Kobel's academic achievements, but also his significant social contributions. Kobel is actively involved in the association “Welcome to Löbtau e. V.”, where, as project manager of the work and training working group, he supports migrants who want to enter the German labor market.

Successes in the integration of migrants

The Work and Training Working Group, which Kobel heads, has had significant successes in the last two years. In 2023, a total of 60 people were placed in permanent employment, 25 in training positions and almost 10 in internships through his advice. This support is important not only for the individual fates of migrants, but also for society, which benefits from diversity and integration.

The working group received the Dresden Integration Prize in 2016 for their outstanding commitment. Kobel's initiative goes beyond traditional academic teaching; He also founded the Particle World network, which actively involves students and teachers in current particle physics research.

Honorary coin as a sign of appreciation

The honorary coin, designed by Tilo Kügler, consists of 60 grams of silver and has a diameter of 5 cm. The front shows the city coat of arms, the Frauenkirche and a laurel branch, while the back is decorated with laurel leaves and the inscription “For merit in volunteer work – the mayor”. This award is the third highest that the state capital Dresden has to offer and was awarded for the first time in 2022. The city council decided to award the award in 2018 to recognize and promote volunteer work.

Every year, up to ten personalities can be honored for their sustainable and voluntary achievements. As Mayor Dirk Hilbert emphasizes, volunteer work is essential for functioning coexistence in society. In addition to Kobel, Marita Schieferdecker-Adolph and Saied Karabij were also awarded the honorary medal for their services.

The award not only shows the appreciation for the individual achievements of the honorees, but also illustrates the commitment of the city of Dresden to honor and support the diverse contributions of its citizens. The focus on integration, education and social cohesion remains a central concern of the city.
