Gauß Lecture 2025: Experience cutting-edge research in mathematics in Chemnitz!

On June 5, 2025, the 43rd Gauß Lecture of the German Mathematical Association (DMV) will take place in the university library of Chemnitz University of Technology, in the “IdeenReich” area. The event starts at 5:00 p.m. and is part of the program TUCculture2025, which is part of the cultural capital Chemnitz. How tu-chemnitz.de reported, the main speaker will be Prof. Dr. Karl-Theodor Sturm from the University of Bonn, whose lecture deals with the topic “Optimal transport, Brownian motion and curvature in non-smooth spaces”.

It starts with an opening lecture by Prof. Dr. Alexandra Carpentier from the University of Potsdam, who deals with the challenges in unsupervised learning and the statistical-computational trade-offs. The Gauß Lecture has been organized by the DMV since 2001 and usually takes place twice a year at different locations in Germany. Its goal is to make cutting-edge research in mathematics tangible and understandable for the interested public.

Aim and meaning of the Gauß lecture

The Gauß lectures are financially supported by Springer Verlag Heidelberg. They represent an important part of the effort to highlight current developments in mathematics. Universities that are interested can apply for the orientation by emailing Prof. Bernhard Hanke, which promotes engagement in the mathematical history community, according to this mathematics.de.

The format of the Gauß Lecture includes not only the scientific lectures, but also accompanying events, which often deal with topics in the history of mathematics or related sciences. This connection to the history of science underlines the rich tradition of mathematics and its influence on numerous areas of life.

The upcoming calendar event

In addition to the upcoming Gauß lecture, there are other future events as part of the DMV:

  • 17. November 2023 in Bielefeld – Hauptsprecher: Martin Hairer, EPF Lausanne
  • 25. Juni 2024 in Klagenfurt – Hauptsprecherin: Monique Laurent, CWI Amsterdam und Universität Tilburg
  • 6. Dezember 2024 in Erlangen – Hauptreferentin: Prof. Dr. Lisa Sauermann, Universität Bonn

The Gauß Lectures not only strengthen interdisciplinary understanding in science, but also contribute to the dissemination of mathematical knowledge among the general public.
