Female engineers of tomorrow: TU Dresden starts trial studies for women!

The Technical University of Dresden (TUD) has started registrations for its trial course “tryING”. This special program is aimed at young women who are considering studying engineering. Participation is free and takes place from August 4th to September 19th, 2025. The aim of the event is to provide an insight into university life and to attract women to underrepresented engineering courses that are currently offered at TUD.

As part of “tryING”, participants can try out various engineering courses. The highlights of the program include workshops about future technologies, meetings with female scientists and exchanges with current students. Excursions to regional companies offer practical insights into everyday working life. The program also includes a preparatory math course, which is intended to offer participants optimal preparation for their studies. Dr. Sylvi Bianchin, head of the Diversity Management department, emphasizes the importance of such support offers for motivating and supporting women in technical and scientific subjects, especially in engineering tu-dresden.de.

Growing number of female MINT students

The proportion of women in MINT courses (mathematics, computer science, natural sciences and technology) has increased in recent years. In the 2022/23 winter semester, around 32 percent of MINT students were women. This is remarkable, especially when you consider that the proportion of female students in MINT subjects was only 22 percent in the winter semester of 1992/93. At the same time, there is a significant increase in the number of women enrolled in engineering. While in 2013 only 106,084 women studied in this field, in 2023 there were already 190,779, which corresponds to an increase of around 80 percent statista.com.

Despite these positive developments, the gender distribution in MINT professions remains unequal. In 2022, the proportion of women in MINT training occupations was only 8.9 percent. This value has not changed noticeably since 2016. The causes of the unequal distribution are complex and include, among other things, social influences, incorrect assessments of one's own skills and gender stereotypes in education.

Commitment of the TU Dresden

The TU Dresden currently offers 20 undergraduate engineering courses and is actively committed to attracting young women to these disciplines through programs such as “tryING”. Those interested in participating can register on the TUD website and thus take advantage of the opportunity to immerse themselves in the world of engineering and actively shape their future cfaed.tu-dresden.de.
