Kita Krabbelkäfer”: Prof. Strohmeier praises diversity and commitment!

On May 15, 2025, Prof. Dr. Gerd Strohmeier, Rector of the Chemnitz University of Technology (TU), the “Krabbelkäfer” daycare center. The daycare center, which is closely linked to the university, is characterized by international diversity and currently looks after around 131 children from 23 nations in ten groups. Around half of the children have at least one parent who studies or works at Chemnitz University of Technology.

Prof. Strohmeier's visit was not only a friendly gesture, but also an appreciation of the importance of the daycare center for the university. The director of the facility and the chair of the parents' council gave him a warm welcome, followed by an impressive musical contribution from the children's choir, which consists of girls and boys of national and international origin.

History and development of the daycare center

The “Krabbelkäfer” daycare center was opened on August 1, 1971 as a children’s combination at the Karl-Marx-Stadt Technical University. Originally she looked after 168 kindergarten children and 72 crèche children exclusively for members of the university. After the fall of communism in 1991, ownership of this facility was transferred from the university to the city of Chemnitz. Today, the daycare center is one of the most popular childcare options for families in the region and has a capacity of 146 children, with four places earmarked for integrative care.

The closure of the daycare center was successfully averted in 2024, which takes into account the importance of the offer for local students and employees. The daycare center cooperates closely with Chemnitz University of Technology in various educational areas, such as natural sciences, sports and languages, in order to offer the children a comprehensive educational offering.

Unique offer and support concept

A special feature of the daycare center is the spacious garden area of around 4,000 square meters, which offers various play options, including climbing and balancing combinations as well as a toboggan hill. These open spaces promote children's motor skills and provide space for creative development. The daycare center also offers homemade food, which underlines the high standards of education and care.

The children's common language is German, which supports language acquisition and creates cultural bridges. In addition, research projects and cultural activities, such as a drumming workshop, are integrated into the programs. A highlight is the children's choir, whose performances at the Chemnitz University of Technology's Christmas market, among others, cause enthusiasm.

From the age of just eight weeks, children have the opportunity to be admitted to daycare. This represents an important relief for students who need flexible care for their little ones. With no closing times during the summer months, the daycare center offers a consistent range of care.

The successful integration of educational policy concepts, such as those required by the European Commission, is also evident in the daycare center. Studies show that early childhood education has a significant impact on children's development. The “Krabbelkäfer” daycare center is a living example of how such concepts can be implemented in everyday life and a high-quality environment for early education can be created.
