Art on campus: Chemnitz digitizes culture for Europe 2025!
As part of the preparations for the European Capital of Culture 2025, the Chemnitz University of Technology (TU Chemnitz) is presenting its latest initiative, which deals with the digitization of works of art on campus. As the TU Chemnitz reported, the final presentation of the project “Capture and digitization of campus art objects” will take place on July 3, 2025 in the Ideas Realm of the University Library, Straße der Kulturen 33. The event will take place from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. and is open free of charge to anyone interested; registration is not required.
The project aims to capture and digitally document the numerous works of art that are spread across open spaces, walls and foyers at the university. Many of these art objects are often unspecified or largely unknown. The project team, consisting of artists and researchers such as Philipp Stiens and Eckhart Wittstock, has already compiled comprehensive research results, which will be presented on the presentation day by Luca Hirsekorn, Frank Diettrich and Erik Neukirchner.
Panel discussion on the future of works of art
In a subsequent panel discussion moderated by Dr. Jens Kassner, the participants will be Prof. Dr. Teresa Paula Pinheiro and Dr. be Matthias Lindner. Topics will include the future use and research of the collected works of art. Visitors also have the opportunity to view the exhibition exhibits on site.
Chemnitz University of Technology is not only active in this project, but also plays a central role in the evaluation of the entire Capital of Culture initiative. Loud Chemnitz 2025 The university is awarded the contract for external academic support and evaluation of the Cultural Capital Chemnitz 2025. This evaluation is carried out by the Method Competence Center at Chemnitz University of Technology under the direction of Prof. Dr. Jochen Mayerl and is scheduled to last from summer 2023 to the beginning of 2027.
Diverse project initiatives for Chemnitz 2025
As part of the “TUCculture2025” task force, Chemnitz University of Technology has already provided a total of 100,000 euros for university project initiatives. Seven interesting projects are currently being implemented in partnership with Chemnitz 2025:
- Ausstellung „Erfinderkultur in Chemnitz und der Region“ – Geplant für 1. März bis 30. September 2025 in der Universitätsbibliothek.
- Veranstaltungsreihe „Unbekannte Nachbarn? Vietnamesische Diaspora in Chemnitz und der Region“ – Thematisierung transnationaler Bildungsbiografien von Vietnames:innen.
- Projekt „Europa im Klassenzimmer – Chemnitzer Analysen sozialistischen und postsozialistischen Schulbüchern“ – Untersuchung von Europabezügen in Schulbüchern vor und nach der Wiedervereinigung.
- „Ein Vierteljahrhundert gelesene Europäische Kulturhauptstädte“ – Präsentation eines Sonderbestands in der Universitätsbibliothek ab Oktober 2024.
- Ausstellung „Bewegung und Stillstand. Das letzte Studienjahr in der DDR“ – Wanderausstellung ab 3. Juni 2025.
- Buchprojekt „Chemnitz als Europäische Kulturhauptstadt 2025“ – Veröffentlichung von Forschungsarbeiten als „open access“.
- „C the Unheard! Datenbasierte Kartierungen zivilgesellschaftlicher Diskurse in Chemnitz“ – Erstellung einer offenen Datensammlung.
In 2025, Chemnitz will become the fourth German city to hold the title of European Capital of Culture, after Berlin, Weimar and the Ruhr area. Together with Nova Gorica in Slovenia, Chemnitz will draw international attention to the Chemnitz cultural region in 2025, which includes numerous partner communities, such as städebau-chemnitz.de reported.
Overall, the initiative aims to stimulate a discourse about architecture, art, music and civic engagement. The various projects and the blog “Chemnitz and more” will help to comprehensively present the city’s cultural development. With all of these activities, Chemnitz 2025 will provide a stage for creative ideas and civic engagement.
