Long Night of Sciences: Exciting discoveries in Dresden!

The upcoming Long Night of Science (LNdW) at the Technical University of Dresden (TUD) on June 20, 2024 promises an exciting evening full of interactive discoveries, knowledge and entertainment. At around 5:00 p.m., over 50 scientific institutions open their doors and invite everyone interested to take part in 212 free events. The LNdW, which is celebrating its 22nd year, is aimed at young and old and offers a variety of highlights, ranging from quantum physics lectures to simulations of S-Bahn trains and airplanes. tu-dresden.de reports that the event lasts until midnight and covers a wide range of topics.

Particularly noteworthy are the scientists who invite you to engage in interactive research, experimentation and learning on this evening. The event is intended not only to impart knowledge, but also to provide a platform where participating scientific institutions present their current work and research results. Participation is completely free of charge, and the Dresden public transport company (DVB) is available to all guests free of charge from 4:00 p.m. to 1:00 a.m. This allows for easy travel to the various event locations, which can be reached by bus, train or MobiBike.

Program highlights of the Long Night

The highlights of the LNdW are diverse and offer something for every area of interest:

But the event also extends beyond the TUD campus. For example, the particle accelerator in the Dresden Felsenkeller for studying nuclear fusion is presented. In addition, technologies for computer- and robot-assisted surgery are presented at the NCT/UCC Dresden, and there is a laparoscopy trainer from the Clinic for Vascular Surgery. Those interested can also take part in political speed dating and ESCO language translations in the COSMO Forum. dresden.de highlights that advertising for this exciting event was already visible on 70 small digital screens in the city center from June 4th to 11th.

Science communication as a foundation

The Long Night of Science is not only an event for the transfer of knowledge, but also an important part of science communication. According to the German Research Foundation (DFG), publicly funded research has the role of informing the general public about scientific findings. Science communication promotes trust between science and society and enables scientific results to be incorporated into social decision-making processes. The DFG supports scientists in Germany in presenting their research transparently and strengthening communication between science and the general public. dfg.de explains that this is a dialogue that shows access to scientific work and the thematic content.

As part of the LNdW, participants can discover Dresden's diverse scientific landscape, which is characterized by a network of eleven universities, several research institutions and competence centers. The state capital Dresden plays a coordinating role and supports the networking of science and citizens.
