Long Night of Sciences: Over 700 events in Dresden!

On June 20, 2025, the Technical University of Dresden (TUD) experienced record-breaking popularity with the “Long Night of Sciences” event. A total of 46,000 visitors were able to find out about the diverse research projects and technologies, which corresponds to an increase of 16,000 guests compared to the previous year. The event began at 5:00 p.m. and ended after an extensive series of events that lasted until midnight. Over 200 events were offered by scientists and employees of TUD as well as more than 40 other research institutions and companies.

The numerous activities offered guests the opportunity to immerse themselves in exciting scientific topics. From cryptography experiments to helium experiments to practical applications with the Da Vinci robot, there was something for everyone. The interactive workshops, which covered elements such as water treatment and programming chemical robots made of Lego, were particularly popular. A highlight was the Science Slam, at which five scientists presented their research topics, with Dr. Ina Hollerer from the Max Planck Institute for Molecular Cell Biology and Genetics was particularly impressed with her contribution about cells.

Diverse program and exciting insights

In total, more than 700 program items were offered at the Long Night of Sciences. The topics ranged from pioneering technologies to interactive exhibitions and exciting research projects. Visitors were able to optimize airfoil profiles in the visitor center of the German Aerospace Center or experience interactive data visualizations in the COSMO Science Forum. The Saxon State Library was also involved, where old tapes were digitized.

There were also interesting insights into the north of Dresden, where various institutions presented their projects. Bosch offered a look into semiconductor and sensor production and the Senckenberg Museum of Natural History covered research on biodiversity and evolution. The Dresden University of Fine Arts offered a special artistic accent with its exhibition “Love of Color”, while the Dresden Philharmonic rounded off the musical offering with a concert of Beethoven's Seventh Symphony.

Family friendly event

The Long Night of Science was designed as a free event aimed at the entire family. On the occasion of the event, Dresdner Verkehrsbetriebe AG increased its offering on selected routes to give guests easy access to the various event locations. Further information on this could be found at www.forschungsnacht-dresden.de/programm.

The Long Night of Science is an important platform for science communication that strengthens the relationship between research and society. The ongoing challenges, such as avoiding unscientific ideas and the limits of science communication, will also be discussed at the upcoming “Inter.Aktion” conference from July 9th to 11th, 2025. This event will take place at the Heilbronn educational campus and experimenta and is aimed at the needs of people in science communication and students in the relevant disciplines.
