Mathematics Olympiad in Chemnitz: 66 talents compete internationally!
The city of Chemnitz, as European Capital of Culture, will be the venue for the 19th Central European Mathematics Olympiad (MeMO) in just a few weeks. From August 25th to 31st, 2025, 66 mathematically gifted students from eleven countries will gather to measure their skills in a challenging competition. This international mathematics competition, which has been held in a different member country every year since 2007, has already made stops in Austria, Croatia, Germany, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Lithuania, Poland, Slovakia, Slovenia and Switzerland. The first MeMO took place in Austria in 2007 and has since become an important event for young mathematicians, reports Chemnitz University of Technology.
The participants will prove themselves in two five-hour exams and through individual and team tasks. With up to six students per country, including a host country, this Olympiad gives young people a platform to demonstrate their mathematical creativity. The German team is made up of the best six participants from level 11 of the “JuMa” funding program, provided they do not take part in the International Mathematics Olympiad (IMO), which is considered the World Mathematics Championship.
Unique event for Chemnitz
The 19th MeMO not only offers participants the opportunity to compete in mathematics, but also promotes cultural exchange. Accompanying persons and students will get to know the city of Chemnitz and the Erzgebirge mining region, which makes the event a cultural enrichment for everyone involved. The local organization is supported by the Friends of Mathematics in Chemnitz e.V., the Chemnitz city administration, the State Office for Schools and Education and the Johannes-Kepler-Gymnasium Chemnitz. This collaboration is a sign of the long tradition that Chemnitz has in hosting mathematics Olympiads. The last major event was the national round of the 58th Mathematics Olympiad in May 2019.
The MeMO, for which there is a lot of anticipation in Chemnitz, is a first for the city in an international context. The direct connection to the IMO, which was launched in 1959 in Romania with seven countries, illustrates the importance of such competitions in promoting mathematical talent worldwide. The IMO has expanded from then to over 100 participating countries and continues to be seen as a crucial driver for the exchange and development of mathematical skills.
